I have 2 chdk cameras, a SD400 and A570.  The remote shutter on the SD400 works almost instantly.  I did a test and it takes about 90 milliseconds (.09 second) to fire, thats with the camera already prefocussed.  But for some strange reason when I tried the same test with the A570, there is about a 5-8 second delay before the picture is taken.

I've double checked all settings, shutter speed is 1/2000.  I'm pretty sure its not a setting issue, because when I manually press the shutter with identical settings, it takes the picture immediately.  For some reason using the remote doesn't though.  You can see that the camera "reacts" to the remote impulse immediately, sometimes firing a immediate preflash, or sometimes not, but then it sits there with a black screen, apparently doing some thinking, before firing the shot about 5-8 seconds later.

Any way to fix this?

Are you using CHDK or SDM ?

I don't know if CHDK works the same way but one option (in SDM) is that first press-and-release prefocuses  (and fires preflash if flash is ON or AUTO and is required) and second press-and-release triggers the shot.

If you don't do second press-and-release it will time-out and take a photo anyway.

It is CHDK, but I have the 2 boxes checked for remote syncing, which makes it so the first press activates and holds prefocus, and the second fires the shot.  Its the exact same settings I have on the SD400 which work great, but for some strange reason I'm getting this 5-8 second delay when using the exact same setup on my a570.

If you do not release after the second press, is the delay to taking the photo exactly the same as if you do ?

As a matter of interest, temporarily rename DISKBOOT.BIN and use the SDM version :-

Well I did a little more testing using a basic switch rather than arduino, it seems that with those same settings (enabling remote syncing) as the sd400, the a570 behaves differently.

Unlike the SD400 where one press does autofocus, next does the shot.  On the A570 the first press of the remote shutter button does autofocus.  Then for the second press, you must press it slowly.  As soon as you press it, it fires a preflash, and then as soon as you release it is when it fires the shot.  However if you don't release it after about 5-8 seconds, it fires the shot anyways, or if you just do a very fast press/release for the second press, it does the same thing, waits about 5-8 seconds and does the shot.

So right now it seems not only a bit more complicated (since I use arduino, I'd have to have a completely different setup with different code for each camera), but also there seems to be no way to wait longer than the 5-8 seconds.  Unlike the sd400 where I simply lock prefocus, wait as long as i want, then fire the shot.  Its just unfortunately the sd400 doesn't have as good of image quality.

Just thought I would update everyone, I found a solution to the issue I was facing with the remote shutter on the A570.  It seems the proper way to do it (at least with those options I had checked), is to give at least a second or more steady voltage with the usb remote for it to auto focus (aka hold the button, if that's what you use), then as soon as you release it and there is no voltage is when the shot fires, extremely quick.

In fact I did a quick test with my laser trigger and grid, and the shutter lag was only roughly 8 milliseconds.  That is insanely fast.  I have never seen any other camera before that has only 8/1000 of a second shutter lag after being prefocused.  It is much faster than the camera even operates if you just press the shutter.  All in all, I am very happy with it right now.

That is 3x faster than I have previously heard of.

Exactly how did you test it ?
