I'm stuck at step 1 - I'm unable to place anything in the SD card directory.

I'm in Windows XP Pro SP3. I have a Canon Ixus 970 IS. I can see my camera directory in explorer. I can see, copy and delete pictures from there. I cannot create or transfer files to the camera's directory.

What should I do?

Hello and welcome !

Not sure what you mean.
You can see images in a sub-folder of the DCIM directory ?

Are you trying to install CHDK ?

What instructions are you trying to follow ?

Because Digital Camera is not a Mass Storage device.
It uses Picture Transfer Protocol, not Mass Storage Protocol.
You can not put any kind of files directly to camera, you will need to use a card reader (or maybe some special software, if camera have some extensions that allows transfers of files of any kind).

I don't have a card reader, though I thought my computer would treat my Canon as a storage device (it does that to my fuji finepix camera).

Is there any way I can have my computer do that?

No, there is no way.
This depends on how hardware was designed - you can not change this.

A card reader is VERY inexpensive, it really is essential.

I guess Canon figured "lets make it as easy as possible to use". Sifting through directories doesn't match that very well, so they just "fake" a device where you only see the photos from the various directories. I explicitly mention the last because that is probably why it is read-only as well; in which directory should it put new files?

Well.. after you have CHDK on it, you can use one of the CHDK PTP tools to upload/download any file.

Very much so. At the very least as backup.

I now do wonder how Canon upgrades the firmware. There has to be a way to hijack it to put CHDK on there, right?

I'll try and organize a card reader.

Hmm.. interesting... but I was hoping for something a bit more in-depth on the workings of it. :)
