Hi
I have Canon powershot A3100 IS camera and and chdk is not yet supported. however i tried the canon basic scripts described on this site and they seem to work
so can anybody help me achieve following through canon basic

I want to capture image automatically at fix interval (around 10 seconds). my PC based software will continuously watch the SD card and will copy files as and when required, so i want to capture images when USB cable is still connected to my PC.
Also if possible i want to avoid the auto lens retract.

Not possible with Canon Basic as far as anyone knows. We never figured out how to use it to capture images (see the canon basic thread for some discussion).

This is relatively unexplored territory, it looks like capturing images at least looks like it should be possible.

Capturing while tethered to USB is a lot trickier. I wouldn't necessarily expect that you could do that in canon basic. You can do it with the CHDK PTP interface or eye-fi http://www.eye.fi/

Probably could be done in factory mode, but you'd have to figure out the "DCP connect" protocol... (don't put your camera in factory mode unless you are very sure you can get it back out again, which might be very hard without CHDK!)

Whether figuring any of this out would be easier than porting CHDK to your camera is not certain. My guess would be not.

The eye fi suggestion is great. i have already ordered it, but it will take sometime as i am located in India.
lens retract problem is also solved. as i can disable it.

>>regarding porting.
i am programmer by profession but i don't have experience in hacking and porting.

I am willing to learn. however the wiki pages on chdk are really not so much useful for me to learn the process of porting chdk.

can you please guide me to any resource that is good for chdk newbie like me

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Adding_support_for_a_new_camera is as good as it gets.

Note that if you just want a CHDK supported camera, the simplest approach would be to buy something that is supported. Porting a camera takes a lot of effort.
