Now have issue. I vaguely remember the card needing to be locked or unlocked.
The card needs to be locked to boot.

The system is so autonomous now that I forget how to set it up since it goes so long before needing to be messed with.
So you got running stable (or stable enough) in the end  ? Good to hear. If there was anything specific you tracked down causing your earlier stability problems, I suspect other users might benefit from that information.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

The camera is a real POS so what I had to do was have my software constantly babysit it and check on it every 2 seconds. When it f*cks up, my software physically resets the power to it. The play button contacts are soldered so when power is reapplied it turns back on. My software handles all of that autonomously. runs for weeks and weeks taking about 1500 pics a day. It manages hard drive space too deleting oldest pics when near full. There a lot more but that's the jist of it.

when the card is locked the camera just complains that the cards is locked. I don't know what changed but it seems that the firmware isn't booting.

I don't know what changed either but it sounds like your SD card is no longer formatted to be bootable.  Take a look at it with sdminst.exe - it will tell you if its bootable and let you reset the bootable state if its not.  You might have to reload your diskboot.bin file as well.  Who knows ?

checked it with sdminst.exe. Was bootable. removed files and formatted anyway. Put files back. Set as bootable. put it in the camera. Result is the same. Custom firmware isn't booting. It's just the stock firmware complaining that the card is locked. I'll try a different card and a different camera when I get the chance.

What's diskboot.bin?

What's diskboot.bin?
Ummm.... the file name of the "custom firmware" that you just "put back" on your card ?

(Ignoring the small semantic distinction that CHDK is not firmware...)

See, I've forgotten this stuff already. The only files on the card were the CHDK folder and the PS.FI2 file.

You can use the ps.fi2 to boot from the Canon menus via the Firmware Update option (press the playback button to start the camera rather than the On/Off key)

UPDATE :  a quick scan back through the forum suggests you were using LUA commands to reboot the camera with the ps.fi2 file ?   It would be nice if you posted what you have actually been doing with CHDK.  People here would be interested.

Yep. The solution to the problem was that I needed to tell it to upgrade firmware. Haven't had to do that before to fix it (except for the first time I set it up) so that's odd but I'm just happy it's up and running again.

Don't forget, its not actually upgrading any firmware when you do that.  Its just loading CHDK into RAM.  If you reset the camera,  you have to go through the whole process again.

Yep, that's what I was just coming here to ask. How to I make it always use CHDK firmware like it used to do before?
