Any chance StealthTaffer can just downgrade the firmware? I just ordered my sx230 as well and I'm worried about the same thing.

Haven't found out if anyone has tried downgrading yet, but have found a couple firmware dumps so maybe it's possible?

Not possible - sorry.   Canon only very occasionally provides a firmware upgrade and there would be no reason for them to provide a downgrade.  Without an official Canon firmware upgrade file,  you cannot change the firmware in your camera.   The CHDK files you are probably referring to are not suitable for changing the firmware in the camera.  Even if it might be possible to figure out how to change firmware without an official Canon file,  nobody has been willing to risk bricking their camera by trying it.

Its more likely that somebody will port the sx230 to the new firmware version at some point.  There is just no way to know when though.

And here I thought I did all the research I could to get a CHDK compatible camera. I understand not being able to push anyone to make a port for the 101e. I just assume that there is a 101d that would end up getting worked on before the 101e. Maybe it's just too late in the product cycle for anyone to care. The 101c never really got worked on, just had the 101b that happened to work for it.

I put in an email to canon support asking for a downgrade option. They will get back with me tomorrow. Looks like the sx230 may have been a bad choice if I can't get anything from canon, which seems unlikely.

Ports are mostly done by people who own the specific camera. There's no particular order, and no one doing the development cares what part of the product cycle it's in or how popular it is.

I'm gonna go with "no".

Once a port for a particular model is done, adding support for another firmware isn't hugely difficult. Chances are someone will do it eventually. Most of the mature ports have all known Canon firmwares supported.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

As expected Canon said no. They will not provide any firmware and say there is no way to downgrade the firmware.

I hate to be pessimistic, but I know it's not an easy task to just to port chdk to another firmware. It takes someone with the knowledge and willingness to work on things. Literally the only reason I bought a new camera is because of Chdk. Otherwise I would have just kept holding off until I could afford a decent dslr.

Maybe there should be a note in the compatible cameras list saying XXX firmware is supported but current firmware is XXX. Until StealthTaffer mentioned the 101e firmware, I never even thought to ask if a newer firmware was available for the camera. And there is no way to find out until you get the camera either.

For any one who actually does their research and tries to buy a new camera based on Chdk compatability, there is no warning that a new camera might not work. Not any ones fault, just a bad situation. Most people probably already have the camera and then learn chdk is available. Mine was learning chdk was available and then trying to find the camara.

I would love to Genie, in 2 days. Got my camera from Bestbuy.com and it won't be here until the 11th.

In the meantime, I'll go research how to do dumps and hopefully I can contribute instead of just complaining :)

Appreciate the offer, a lot.

Update;
Just to verify how universal dumper card is made, I'm using windows 7 for this. Made the .req and .m files in notepad, added the required text, and then changed the extensions.
1. I used EOScard to write the script string - done
2. create script.req with "for DC_scriptdisk" written in the file - done
3. create extend.m with the universal dumper script written in it - done

Did I miss anything or do this incorrectly?

Re: PowerShot SX230 HS - Porting Thread (GPS Logger issue)
« Reply #469 on: 10 / February / 2012, 21:48:50 »
Found a bug:
With GPS logger on, and CHDK in use, the camera will wake itself up into playback mode a few seconds to a couple minutes after turning off the camera.

What should happen:
With GPS logger on, the camera should not wake itself up into playback mode after turning off the camera.

I use GPS logger when the camera will be on / off fairly rapidly, but I don't want to wait for the GPS to reaquire. GPS logger can also be used just to log a path, so it has at least two legitimate uses. I've got no idea where to even begin looking in the code to tackle this bug.

Tested on SX230HS 1.01c, build 1659. Also tested on a prior build; I do not know the prior build.
