I actually bought the battery holders for my radio control plane and car to run the receiver/servos, which would leave the main battery pack to run the motor that NEEDS the main battery's power... Here's the link. For the camera side, various people make AC power adapters for these model cameras; I have one for my SD770 (NB-6L) and one for this one. Example here. Look on the battery door.. Ever wondered what that little piece of rubber covers? That's where the power plug lines up ;) And last but not least, here's pictures of the rig I have currently....
The entire thing (camera, mount, battery packs) -- Battery packs w/ 8 total Duracell 2650mAh NiMH AA batteries (4+4 in parallel) :D -- Camera on, powered by the packs -- Voltage registered by the camera vs volt meter... That's the part I find odd.

I do not carry around the camera with the battery pack; this setup is for prolonged use where I don't have access to a close-by AC outlet... Time lapse video, to be specific. However, you could probably run much longer wire between the pack and camera, that way the battery pack can stay in your pocket or something while you use the camera. I have no benchmarks as to how long the pack(s) last yet, as I have yet to use them... But I'd be willing to say it'd probably last well beyond a day of continuous use.

For those that may wonder, the mount I have it on is nothing more than a spring clamp and a cheapo tripod (link) with no legs. Very handy as an in-car dash camera mount... Or pretty much anywhere mount, lol.

Oh, one thing I did forget to answer... The middle terminal on the battery is for temperature monitoring, and is not required for the camera to have power.

AK49BWL,

Thanks for all that information.  I'm going to have to try to create that AC adapter thing or get a generic one.  That stock Canon one at $50's a bit steep.

Question about your clamp and cheap tripod ball head setup.  Did your clamp come with that little metal thing sticking out or did you weld it on or somethin'?  I mean How does the ballhead attach to the clamp?

I own a Canon SLR too... in which I've been looking at something exactly like your setup for holding down little accessories (flash, reflectors, etc) when I'm doing macro shots.  In fact, your setup looks exactly like Manfrotto 175F Justin Spring Clamp with Flash Shoe .. just with a lighter load capacity.... but probably at 1/10th the price!

@sylikc, I found that you can buy just the dummy battery at bestbatt.com for ~$8-$10, but you have to call, it's not in their catalog. They also have knock-off adapters for 1/2 the price of the canon ones, or you can buy the plug to fit the dummy battery at an electronics store for ~$2 and scrounge up an ac adapter/build a batt pack w the right voltage.

Hi Genie,

I can't speak much German, even less Bavarian :), so I'll have to post this here. The latest builds for the 1.0.0c firmware which I got from the German forums have a frequent problem in video mode, where the firmware crashes/camera turns off with the lens extended in the middle of a recording.

I am not sure if the problem existed in the early builds or it was introduced recently, but it is fairly easy to reproduce the bug, usually it shows up after one minute or so into the full HD recording with the default settings.

I dunno about lighter load cap.... This clamp can handle my SX20 with little difficulty, and that is NOT a light camera! lol. As for the AC Adapter, this is the one I bought, but beware buying it there... I wouldn't again, given the choice, due to the way the dummy battery is poorly made.. I've had to fix it 3 times - before I could even use it, I had to fix the fact that the plug inside the thing didn't even line up with the hole in the bottom.. Chunk of junk it is. I would buy the Canon model, expensive as it is.

This is the clamp end with no cover; all I did was drill a hole on the end, and the metal thing sticking out is actually a threaded tube washer.. You can see the screw going into it here. For my setup, I took apart the entire tripod and replaced the back nut that holds the tripod legs' screw in place with a machine bolt... Which is threaded into the same tube washer that holds the thing to the clamp. I'm hesitant to take it apart again for more revealing pictures, as it was a major pain to put it together...

Hi rovinhoot

The latest builds for the 1.0.0c firmware which I got from the German forums have a frequent problem in video mode, where the firmware crashes/camera turns off with the lens extended in the middle of a recording.

Do you have the latest Version from the Auto Build Server from the german Forum?
http://forum.chdk-treff.de/download.php

I do not know what went wrong with the video. This bug as you describe in your post has been solved weeks ago.

If you have the latest version: please send me a pm and attach your CCHDK.CFG. You will find the CCHDK.CFG in the CHDK directory on your SD-card.

I think we can solve this fault.

Bye

Hi Genie, I've downloaded the latest version 801 (I was using 795 before) and did some testing today. It appears to work very well in video now and I could not get it to crash again.

It is possible the older version was the problem, also there is a small chance the shut down could have been caused by improper seating of the battery (I am using a 3rd party battery which is a bit thicker than the Canon and slightly difficult to insert into camera).

I will keep testing and investigate more thoroughly if it happens again. Thanks!

Hey

Here is a alpha01 version of CHDK for the sx230hs firmware 101b
PS.FI2 - http://www.box.net/shared/42ai6h8dnimy77hx0o3e

I dont have the camera so this is currently untested. Let me know what happens.

Taliesin
Thanks for all your work in getting this together.

I was able to get this working, however, it seemed like the camera was getting hot and the battery was being drained very quickly.

I'm pretty new to CHDK, if there's any tests specifically that I can run, let me know.

Let me know if you can reproduce the bug. If so post the steps and I will look into it. gmail tends to not receive the emails to say a new post has been meade here :(.. so I missed a lot.

Also  I cant take all the credit, Genie has put a lot of time into it too. If not more than myself.

Taliesin,

So far so good.  I had suspected at one point that the video crashing had to do with something along the lines of the ISO400 bug because it happened particularly when zooming onto something relatively dark (like a sudden bright to dark transition)....  If it ever comes up again, I'll report back.

Just curious, what was the reason the ISO400 bug manifested to begin with?  Thank YOU and Genie for fixing that... seriously difficult to work with ;).  So was it a bad address?  And what bad address would cause just everything above the certain ISO to kill the camera?

/sylikc

I Had some bad addresses in the makefile.inc so CHDK expected the memory in a different format than was in realality. I think because of this some of jumps/memory allociations were failing. Dont really know much more than this sorry, which was why it was so hard to track down.

Taliesin,

Well, thanks for taking the time to bug hunt ;)

I took the camera out for a serious beating this weekend and unfortunately it still crashes when taking video.  I am trying to figure out how to get it to crash, but so far, I haven't come up with a consistent method.

So far, I think it's like...
* camera recording in a low light or medium lit (overcast) condition
* recording length is significantly long (30s+ or 1min+ or something)

The camera will then turn off with lens extended.  Pressing the power button will retract the lens and boot the camera.  The video that was recording at the time of the crash will not be committed (basically just not there).

Are there any crash dumps I can save right away if it happens to help debug the problem?  I am really having a hard time reproducing it, and it really just happens the time I'd least want it to [recording a long video of an event :( ].

Additional detail is that I'm using a 32GB SDHC card, Sandisk's Extreme edition.  Previously I used the Extreme 8GB.  Bought them off of B&H so they're definitely genuine, and they're fast... so speed shouldn't be an issue.

More details: Previously in the older firmware version when I first reported, I used 720p video.  Now I'm doing 1080p.

Sylikc

Ill have a look into it this weekend if I get time.

If possible can you post the contents of the ROMLOG. To create it requres some modification to SD CARD. The instrustructions are on the CHDK Wiki.

Thanks
Michael
