Maybe there should be a note in the compatible cameras list saying XXX firmware is supported but current firmware is XXX. Until StealthTaffer mentioned the 101e firmware, I never even thought to ask if a newer firmware was available for the camera. And there is no way to find out until you get the camera either.
You are welcome to note the unsupported versions on the cameras wiki page. Anyone considering buying a camera should look there.

As long as a camera is in production, there's always a chance you will get an unknown firmware variant.

I would love to Genie, in 2 days. Got my camera from Bestbuy.com and it won't be here until the 11th.
If you don't have the camera, then you don't know what firmware version it will be. Just because later versions have been seen doesn't mean there aren't a lot of old ones in the channel.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

I have a SX230hs 1.01a. I use 4GB/FAT32 SD card. I compile the 1572 full trunk using CHDK shell. I copied unzipped contente into root and <Alt> (disp.+set) doesn't seam to work.

Did I miss something ?

The current trunk now uses loadable modules.   Did you also copy the unzipped module subdirectory to the SD card ?

The zip file, and the SD, contain a CHDK\MODULES folder filled with a bunch of .flt files. Is that you are expecting ?

Yes.

Did you see the CHDK logo on boot ?

Also,  did you check the source (kbd.c) to determine what <ALT> mode activation key sequence is being used ?

No CHDK logo
In "SX230" kbd.c, at line 20
"static long alt_mode_key_mask = 0x00010800; // disp + set"

From http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/SX230
Code: [Select]
This section describes special CHDK-related things...

 - access <ALT> mode by pressing DISP + FUNC.SET button.
 - to start directly in Record mode, hold down the Power ON/OFF button ~ 1-2 seconds
 - no dual partitioning required, the camera supports booting from FAT32(4GB+) formatted SD cards.
 - For 4GB+ SD cards follow this steps:
 - format the SD card from the original camera options menu
 - copy DISKBOOT.BIN, PS.FI2 and the CHDK folder on SD card

 - start the camera by holding the PLAYBACKbutton for ~ 1-2 seconds
 - select Firm Update...-> OK
 - go into <ALT> mode -> Menu -> Miscellaneous stuff -> Make card bootable...

 - lock the SD card to boot directly into CHDK

No PS.FI2 file and I don't have Canon Menu - firm update too !

I just download the 1659 full beta zip file from CHDK wiki.
The root contains PS.FI2 file.
I start my cam, unlocked, and found the firm update option :)

In playmode, I update firmware and saw the CHDK logo.
Now, I expect to make my SD card bootable but ... ?

Note: The downloaded 1659 full beta zip file doesn't contain modules folder (???)

Once you have booted via the "Firmware Update" method,  you should be able to use the "Make Card Bootable..." menu choice in the Miscellaneous menu.  As your card is 4G,  you can format it FAT16 and use any of the normal config / install methods :

The download from the autobuild server is from the CHDK "stable" branch.  Newer features like module loading, USB remote update,  scripted graphic etc are not in that branch.
