The "AF Scan in Video" setting doesn't appear on the menu.

So far, the only two videos that didn't crash were 320x240 at 30 fps using CHDK, one at 50% quality and one at 90% quality. (Others have crashed before with the same settings.) The next video attempt was standard 720p at 50% quality. It crashed at about 18 minutes, 23 seconds. Other than the change from 320x240 to 1280x720, all other CHDK settings remained the same.

What is the 'Video Mode" setting in that menu ? Default should disable the quality override feature completely. Checking the quality control checkbox should just allow you to change the quality while recording.

It was set to Quality instead of Default. I haven't tried to change the video quality while recording. Here's the romlog.

For people with accidental RAW disabling: I find it much easier to use Play as my ALT button. Far easier to activate and Play still works if you hold it for a second. Plus I never accidentally disable RAW :)

Thanks msl and true ! That works great !

I believe there are two bugs with the SX230HS 101B software:
1. When booting up in CHDK, the camera starts in playback mode, not shoot mode.
2. When in playback mode, pressing the Playback button (which normally should cause the camera to switch to shoot mode) causes the camera to shut down.

I appreciate the hard work that has gone into the CHDK software for the SX230HS.

lol neither of those are bugs. Assuming you are auto booting into chdk you should see the chdk screen. If you want to auto boot into shoot mode, press and hold the power button.

To get to shoot mode from playback, either change modes by turning the dial or I think hitting the shutter button will work.

1. When booting up in CHDK, the camera starts in playback mode, not shoot mode.
Normal behaviour with CHDK, caused by the original camera firmware ("by design").
Like GreedyRogue explained: either hold the power button for ~1s to start the camera directly in record mode, or half-press the shutter button once to switch from playback to record mode.

2. When in playback mode, pressing the Playback button (which normally should cause the camera to switch to shoot mode) causes the camera to shut down.
Powered on in playback mode, the PLAY [>] button powers off again the camera when the lens is retracted - this is the expected behaviour, like documented in the Canon manual, nothing CHDK related !

After setting the "Video without Timelimit" setting in the Video Parameters section, it does not stay set after the camera is shut off. (In other words. not only does this setting not survive the ubiquitous video crashing, it also does not survive a normal press of the ON/OFF button.) It must be reset each time after turning on the camera.

Also, whenever CHDK crashes in video mode (which is almost all the time), the ROMLOG.LOG is extremely similar each time to the log first shown last summer by another user. If it would help, I would be glad to upload a bucketload of ROMLOG.LOG files. But because of their extreme similarity, I'm not sure that would provide actual further information. Is there anything that I can supply that would help with further troubleshooting of this fatal bug?

This setting is not saved with the CHDK config, it's reset when the camera is restarted, to avoid potential hardware damage.

Ah... so it seems I've been away from the forum for a long long time... the bug still exists.

I'd probably be the one with the romlog quite a while back, and I couldn't nail down what was causing the crash.  I'm not necessarily sure I'm reading it right, but did the crashing stop after turning Video Quality Control to OFF?

These days, my workaround is just to load it manually when I need the DNG and then use it normally for video (no CHDK).  The other thing that bothers me is that there was an outstanding issue about JPG file sizes being "low quality" (smaller than usual) when using CHDK vs not using it.   I don't believe that was ever bug hunted either.

Last I talked to talesin, his camera was broken/stolen, so he can't develop on it.  Genie, do you have any more time to look at these somewhat "critical" bugs?

Hi

@ sylikc
Please tell me what CHDK your are using. From CHDK or CHDK-DE.

I use the Version from CHDK-DE and i have no Problems with Video.

The CHDK autobuild 1759 included a change to fix a video crash. It didn't help the SX230HS / firmware 101C, though. With CHDK 1760, video is still crashing, this time after about 6.5 minutes, and the ROMLOG.LOG looks like it always does.
