Hi,

My old 2GB card went when I plugged in a third-party power supply and it burned out the card (but not the camera).

I installed CHDK like last time with the 'CardTricks144.exe' installer. However since this card and the standard minimum these days is 8GB, it cannot be booted.

How do I manually load CHDK? I read page after page (dozens and dozens I looked through)
and none had a clear, concise to the point guide on how to manually load CHDK.

I have a Canon A550.

If you don't want the hassles of dealing with multiparition, a simple alternative would be to get a 4gb SDHC just for CHDK. They are still available and not terribly expensive.

Or if you are really stuck,  just reformat your 8G card as a 4G device.  Yes - its a waste of the other 4G but how often do people really collect more than 4G worth of 2M- 4M photos on a card ?  (Okay - RAW and video suck up a bunch more ... )

thank you.

all i want to do is manually load CHDK. How do I do that? Like I wrote I could not find something clear or concise and I read dozens of pages. It should be right on the FAQ or something?

The key thing you have to do is to put the appropriate PS.FIR file onto a card. As others have pointed out, this is easy if the card is 4Gb or less, but if it's bigger, you have to put the PS.FIR file onto a small FAT16 partition on the card (16Mb say). The rest of the card, formatted as FAT32, is for photos and the CHDK folders containing scripts.

So, either get a card that's 4Gb or smaller, or follow the instructions in the FAQ about formatting a larger card. The former is MUCH easier (and won't cost you more than a few dollars).

Sorry to butt in, but that's not true ... It's only DISKBOOT.BIN (used for automatic loading of CHDK)
that requires a FAT16 partition to run; it also requires the card to be write-protected.
 
The PS.FI2 (or PS.FIR for older, VxWorks cams) which are used for manual loading are completely
partition-agnostic, they will start happily from FAT16, FAT32 or even from the new exFAT.

In other words, for manual CHDK loading no 'special treatment' for your cards is necessary, all you
need to do is unpack the proper CHDK zip to your card, start your camera in Playback mode (important!)
and after activating the Canon menu, the "Firm update" option should appear, usually at the bottom
of the leftmost tab.

i only check in once in a while.

I can't get the canon a550 into that firmware upload mode. I followed the directions but they don't work.

That's where I get stuck.
