How do you wake it from power down mode?

The camera wakes up automatically after a previously entered time...

FWIW, the modern cameras that charge over microusb can be booted using the USB port https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=13952.0

A few very old ones have similar behavior.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

So can you set a wake alarm from CHDK and the camera wakes up?

On EOS M cams you have a function power_down_for_seconds(). You can then take a picture again and again and put the camera to sleep between. See Script  PowDownInt.lua at https://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=13956.0
