Can anyone please suggest a good model ?

Dear friends,
I own two Canon bodies (5D mk2 and 7D) but know absolutely nothing about the compacts.

I would want to buy a compact to make timelapses without killing my two reflex bodies too quick :)

Timelapses of clouds, of sunsets, riveing in the car and people moving in town some ideas I have.

The problem I am having is that I cannot seem to find recent models of compacts which support the CHDK fw .The ideal for me would be some 6 9 months old model which I could find on ebay used.

Thank you in advance for your kind replies.

Basically, the better a camera is without CHDK, the better it will be with CHDK, +/- any quirks with that particular port.

You can go through http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Supported_Cameras or the list on http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/For_Developers to find cameras you think you might be interested in. The second one might be more convenient since it's organized by generation and form factor (but keep in mind the ones in black an blue are NOT supported, and the purple ones may or may not be complete ports).

Check the wiki pages and development threads for the specific camera to find out about any CHDK specific quirks.

Porting is a lot of work, and depends on volunteers who both own the camera and have some very specific technical skills. Given how fast Canons product cycles are, this means the most of the current lineup is not supported at any given time.

Canon release new compact cameras twice a year - in Jan/Feb and Aug/Sep.
This link will give you a good idea of when the different models were released plus you can click on each camera to see the specs - http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/compacts

While many of this years models are being worked on (SX220HS, SX230HS, A495 to name a few) they are still in development and may not be fully implemented and stable for a while. I think funnel has a pretty stable version for the SX220HS; but only for one firmware version so far (if you get a camera with the other known version you will have to wait).

Support for last years models is much broader, my ports to the G12 and SX30 are pretty stable; but I may be biased :)

I'd suggest looking at what cameras from 2010 best meet your needs feature and price wise then checking how well supported they are with CHDK.

Phil.

CHDK ports:
  sx30is (1.00c, 1.00h, 1.00l, 1.00n & 1.00p)
  g12 (1.00c, 1.00e, 1.00f & 1.00g)
  sx130is (1.01d & 1.01f)
  ixus310hs (1.00a & 1.01a)
  sx40hs (1.00d, 1.00g & 1.00i)
  g1x (1.00e, 1.00f & 1.00g)
  g5x (1.00c, 1.01a, 1.01b)
  g7x2 (1.01a, 1.01b, 1.10b)

Thanks Phil,
the G12 would be a great choice :) but as I said I have upper end Canon bodies to do my regular stuff (if you care to see http://foton.zenfolio.com ) but want to do timelapse and as timelapse will tax my shutter I do not want to do that with my 5D or 7D. I am therefore looking for soemthing I could buy at a 100-150 price point to "sacrifice" to timelapse art ! :)

A495 - bit of a battery eater though.

Good luck with the eBay thing.  People have an interesting idea of what a two year old camera is worth.

If you can find an older A series (A590 or earlier) many of them have a real aperture.

You could also consider the SXnnn series.  The SX120 and 130 aren't available in the main CHDK builds, but there are builds available in the development thread and from CHDKDE http://forum.chdk-treff.de/download.php

Before you go with the SX130, be sure to read the warning http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/SX130

400 images with 2x AA NiMH batteries is not so bad ;)
As I don't own the camera,  I had to go on this review :
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-a495-silver/4505-6501_7-33948040.html

EDIT : also, the lower rating reviews on Amazon.com mention battery life prominently too http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-A495-2-5-Inch-Blue/dp/B0032JRRXY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308519744&sr=8-1

Personally,  I'd just buy a couple of sets of good rechargables and a good battery charger and not worry about it.  Using standard AA cells is a good thing - you never find yourself with a dead "custom" Canon battery.
