Make sure you copy the whole content of the distribution archive to the card. Your problems might be due to missing CHDK modules.
Just tried it myself, I have not encountered any of the above problems.
I happen to be the one who made this port btw (it was my first).

Nice to meet you! Gimme a paypal account, IOU a beer.

I copied the whole content of the zip file to the SD card. Maybe we are using different versions? I downloaded

Tried with the very same archive, it still works. Check "Miscellaneous stuff" -> "Console" -> "Display last console" for error messages.

Back to basics here maybe?  How did you configure your SD card?  Are you using the "Firmware Update" method or "SD Card Lock" autoboot?

Console says:
Fail to load _dng.flt: file not found

The card has a file /MODULES/_dng.flt
Seems like it can't access it (?)

The card is configured to autoboot. I prepared it with LICKS (creates a unique FAT16 partition and makes it bootable), and then copied the whole zip contents to the SD card.
In case it's useful:

# fdisk -l /dev/mmcblk0

Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 2015 MB, 2015363072 bytes
9 heads, 16 sectors/track, 27335 cylinders, total 3936256 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/mmcblk0p1            2048     3936255     1967104    4  FAT16 <32M

I can change the partition to any other type if you tell me how to make it bootable.

It should be in /CHDK/MODULES/

Yes, it's there, sorry.

You might want to try STICK instead ?

Already tried it, it doesn't recognize my SD card. The log says it recognizes it, but it's not shown in the options. Software bug. I already reported it.

I saw a module option, inside miscellaneous options. I enabled the logging but nothing is logged.
Module inspector does nothing.
Also, after a crash (because of selecting dng format 1.1 with save raw option enabled). I enabled boot rom logging.
Here's the log:

NOW IT WORKS!!!

After a lot of effort and failed proofs, I hexedited the first sectors of the card. A weird string was there, something like "bad partition table, no operating system". OMG, I said, how did that get there.

I wiped the partition table (dd if=/dev/zero blah), created a new one with gparted, formatted the SD card with the camera, hexdumped it again... and there it was, that strange string there again.

So, I wiped the SD card again, created the partition table and the partition with gparted, and then
echo -n BOOTDISK | dd bs=1 count=8 seek=64 of=/dev/mmcblk0p1
Copied the files, locked the card, and IT WORKED!
And now I see the difference, it shows a logo and uses a different font. And of course, dng format works.

Damn it caused me a headache.

Sorry for wasting your time, folks.

But at least now we know that there may be a problem when formatting the partition with the camera. Maybe one of you wants to try to reproduce the bug. I could edit the wiki to warn about it.

I'd hold off on that for now.  Formatting the card in the camera and using CHDK booted via the firmware update method to make the card bootable has been one of the default "go to" methods for years now.   Getting CHDK installed can be a big challenge for new users - casting doubt on a (so far) well proven method needs to be done with some care.

Yours is the first & only report of a failure (AFAIK) - it would be interesting to see if srsa_4c can get the same issue on his A420.
