Hi Everyone,

My Canon A570IS P&S is a 2 AA  that allows the use of NiMH batteries (maybe all the 2 AAs P&S do?)

Would like to build a remote battery pack for a wildlife triggered camera system

Has anyone done something like this? 

I did a search and found "about USB Remote Battery" by es_maam  would have like to ask status of this project but es_maam has not been active for a while.

Since this pack will experience low temperatures am wondering if a UltraCapacitor & Battery Power Supply will have an advantage over a battery only supply?

Am interested in any comments...

Have been searching the Internet to find out if there are any AA UltraCapacitors.  Have not found any to date so if anyone knows of them would be interested.

Did find a "Comparison of energy in AA battery vs Ultracapacitor  My battery: 1.2 V Ni-MH, 1700 mAH
The ultracap: 2.7 V, 310 F....I don't believe my battery can really supply 1.7A for one hour. Maybe half that if I'm lucky-- bringing it to 3672 Joules. That's still 3x more energy than this particular ultracap can store."

Big question is there is a significant advantage (especially at low temperatures) adding an UltraCapacitor to a battery pack?

Are you trying to build a USB remote trigger or add an external battery pack to your camera? They are two different projects.

The USB port is used as a remote camera trigger.

The DC jack on your camera is used to supply an external power source, be it batteries or power derived from a mains supply.

There are other posts in the above section.

Ultra capacitors are used for specialised applications, they not used in situations where there is a removable power supply. One thing is certain; if you use an ultra capacitor on your camera and there is a fault say good-by to your camera.

Yes it is possible.You can use the UltraCapacitor paralel to the batteries inside the camera.
The Ultracapacitor outside.
Important thing is working voltage of the Capacitor.It's good to be little above battery pack.
If your camera using 3v the capacitor must be with same or a little bit more voltage marked on his body.
Another important thing is the charge of the Capacitor.
When Capacitor is empty, he is short circuit for the battery in beginning of the charge! When charge start the Curent is very high - imagine you make short with wire on your batteries ! After some time this curent going down - time depends of the capacity in Farads.At the end of the charge curent tends to go to Zero. It is good to make charge with serial rezistor between battery and capacitor to limit the curent and save battery... to say several Ohm's.After charge this resistor is ommited and capacitor can be connected paralel to batteries.
It is possible to charge UltraCapacitor from external supply with same voltage like your batteries.
But take care for the voltage to be no more than batteries or a little less !
If it is little less, the capacitor will take the rest from batteries.

The UltraCapacitor never charge above voltage of the batteries (or external supply with same voltage)!
No danger for overvoltage -  if You take care, when using external  supply !
It is very good Idea ! UltraCapacitors are in use paralel to auto accumulators to save they life and to make start fast.
