I think I need to take better care of my cameras, I've now broken 2 canon powershots :(

I used a too high voltage with my A480 which must have destroyed something inside. I had my A495 on the beach and got sand in the lens (must've been from my pocket, its not like I was burying it)!

First thing, the A495 is still responsive, it actually gives me a "lens error" message (which I suppose is better than it just dying) but it made horrible gritty sounds as the lens moved in and out. Would the lens still be fixable if I dismantled the camera and cleared out the lens?

Failing that, seeing as I have 2 very similar cameras, would replacing the A495's lens with the A480's work? Is that at all possible?

Some people have reported success with this. If you search google for "canon lens error" or "canon e18 error" you should be able to find some results.

This is very unlikely IMO, unless the hardware is 100% identical. Not just just "looks similar" but all exactly the same parts.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
