Best minimum voltage setting?

I'm guessing maximum should be what the voltage reads when the batteries are fully charged, but what about minimum?

I have a Canon a570.  What is the minimum voltage in will run at?

Thanks much!

Hello & welcome, damian5000 !

Since this depends on the batteries (and varies e.g. with type and/or age of the batteries),
you may adjust the min/max voltage setting for your batteries to get the best result for your camera/battery combination...

...
Set the Min / Max Volt setting to the values of your battery...

--> http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_User_Manual#Battery

1) enable battery voltage on the OSD:
  • Show battery volts

2) set "Max Voltage" to the value (Voltage) shown with a fully loaded battery
3) set "Min Voltage" to the value shown before the camera powers off due to low battery

After setting the values for your battery, you can set the OSD to "Show battery percent" again...

On my A650is, the external power supply plastic stamp (DC IN, under the protective cover) indicates 4.3 volts and I use 4 AA batteries.

4 AA batteries supply about 6 V (fully charged) and CHDK batt indicates near that with new batteries (sinking current when on, lower batt volts).

My other question: Why DC IN is 4.3 V and max voltage is near 6 V ?

Electronic components are designed for a maximum and a minimum working voltage. The chips in consumer devices generate heat. It may be the case that on battery powered equipment the internal circuits have a standby or shut-down period to conserve the internal battery.

When using an external power pack or power supply, the manufacturer has anticipated that the device will be used continuously. By reducing the voltage to the minimum working voltage, there is less heat generated for the same workload.

It may be an interesting exercise to compare the heat generated, by touch, between internal battery use and external power pack or power supply. That information may be useful to those members who shoot continuous photos on an external power supply to determine the long term reliability of their camera.

Good point thepanoguy !
I am not able to touch but display circuit temps could be interesting ...

The a570 shuts down at about 2.0 V (I'm not saying that's the perfect setting for a battery indicator, just what I've observed using a lab psu).
