What causes camera startup delay?

Without CHDK, the lens extends immediatly after pressing ON button.
With CHDK there is  almost second lag.
What causes it? Which part of CHDK code? Which action? Can it be eliminated? Is easy to eliminate it? Can I do it?

Do you have script autostart activated ? Then this might be caused by the script your using. Try it again with the default script,
this does not cause a noticable delay (tested on A620 / 630)

BTW please try to be as clear as possible when reporting problems, as a minimum mention the cam your talking about
        Hint: To make it easier not to forget this, include your cam in your forum profile; if in "Personal Text" it will show
                up to the left of your post, if in "Signature" on the last line of your post.

why a skript autostart? I though making card bootable, loking it, and putting DISKBOOT.BIN on it is sufficent to run CHDK?

@jetzt
Well I was only asking IF he had activated it, in case that added a delay.
Pretty hard to say since we know nothing else (cam, CHDK version, level of CHDK experience etc.)

@obsidian
Otherwise, I can only assume that it's the time that CHDK needs to boot. If you know that it's not that
(from previous experience) we must check further.
We will need more info though (see above)

ciao,

wim

A really true opinion, but I have to add this: work hard instead of thinking about start-up delays,
AND buy good batteries for the money you earn: I've missed some shots due to some low battery warnings!(not only warnings)

The canon P&S are really very fast, my first own camera was a Fuji (very old style). In those times start-up delays were
a real issue.
But that again is nothing if you compare it with the cams or better trucks of 1995 when I tried them in my fathers office.
(And those were no no names, ...) That's endless, I'll stop here.

Edit: I have good bats, but they often get too cold. And you have to recharge every battery sometimes, some earlier some later. Mine are in the middle, but I'll build a universial battery-adapt for a710's dc-in and use some old 7.2V 2200mAh Li-ions
these don't get frozen that easyly.

My signature has been edited. I have A710 IS, Allbest 37.
I think i am experienced enough in CHDK. I have edited sources aand compiled to fix one error(showing Focus info when half press altough off), written srcitpt Easy MF&Zoom In video. Definitely, I can use the features CHDK offers.

Autoloading is off.

I have Sanyo 1700 batteries. Best solution. Real Capacity after years still 1700.
GP 2300- unusable, GP 2600 - real capacity 1800. Tested on Voltcraft IPC-1.
Do you want more experience with batteries(new thread)?

Is the delay affected by file system( FAT16/32, formatted in PC/cam)?

In brief...
With CHDK a camera have to boot twice.
At the start the camera loads CHDK from SD-card and passes control to CHDK code. CHDK copies itself to a safe place, installs hooks and reboots the camera. On second boot it skips autoboot (to avoid infinite loop) and run in parallel with original firmware.

PS. I use Ansmann-2300 batteries (real capacity 2350-2400 by LaCrosse BC-900).
