quick grab-to-photo time, is CHDK right for me?

Before I go out and buy a Canon camera, I was wondering if somebody could give me an idea if CHDK can do what I want.

I intend to write a script that speeds up the grab-to-photo time (time time between when I notice something and grab the camera to the time the photo is taken).

I'm taking data-collection photos of signs and LCD displays in a specific environment and don't care much about photo quality as long as the text is readable, so I intend to write a script that:

1) disables the auto-off feature
2) turns off the flash
3) sets the focus to 5 feet
4) sets the shutter speed to a medium value

Can this script be written with CHDK and will it result in the quick-taking photos I desire?  It seems to me the camera doesn't have much work to do before taking a photo if the above three steps are already taken care of.

Is battery life going to be an issue because of disabling auto-off?  I can add an external battery pack if I have to.

1) disables the auto-off feature
Yes.

2) turns off the flash
Almost all canons have this option in the regular firmware.

3) sets the focus to 5 feet
Yes. A model with MF will also let you do this in the normal firmware. Many also have AF lock, so you can focus at 5ft once, and then lock focus there.

4) sets the shutter speed to a medium value
Yes.

That would depend how long you need to to run for. On some models (mostly but not always ones with an optical view finder) you can turn the display off, which saves quite a bit of power.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
