Thank you so much hanulis. So much respect for you and JustJ's work.

This has seriously made my week.

I tried Hanulis's alpha omega build for 101.b in an 101.c camera and although the splash screen and menus came up i could not take any usable raw photos with it which is my sole aim.

It recorded only one crw file after each start up but all were of the same file size. It sometimes seemed to do a bad pixel photo but could not be set to a DNG format saying you first needed to do a bad pixel photo.
I guess it has the same flaws as noted in the other builds or maybe I am so out of touch with CHDK that I no longer know how to use it.
It was very confusing loading it. I used a 4GB card and had to use Cardtricks to get the "rar" file to open on the SD card as I could not see a firmware upgrade thing in the menu.
I also could not determine a key press to toggle the raw on and off.
The "zoom in" "function" combination to toggle alt mode is pretty awkward.

In the past I have used CHDK on a couple of cameras and then given it away as it was hard to get a raw photo to be better than a jpg especially if the hue was a bit out. This time I wanted a few sample dng files to see if they opened in my raw editor and what their quality was like.

Anyway, Thanks to all those working on this.

Some remarks about hanulis' new build (alpha-omega, http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=6751.msg81198#msg81198):
  • (first of all: thank you, hanulis!)
  • It is apparently compiled using the new chdk 1.1 - allbest and morebest features are (partly?) included (now standard for chdk, as I understood)
  • As hanulis writes: it is for firmware 1.01b!! (but works also with 1.01c, as there are "only minor changes to 1.01b" see http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=288.msg78830#msg78830)
  • The zip file contains only the DISKBOOT.BIN for autostart of chdk; your sd-card needs to be prepared for autostart or nothing will happen (see http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_for_Dummies#Card_Lock_Boot_Method).
  • The PS.FI2 is needed for loading chdk manually; it is not the same file as DISKBOOT.BIN and PS.FI2 doesn't use it. I don't dare to rename DISKBOOT.BIN
  • In the CHDK-folder needs to be a sub-folder "MODULES" with the .flt-files (modules). So only replacing the DISKBOOT.BIN on the card is not enough, as you will get lots of error messages.

Changes, which I found (so far) in alpha-omega:
  • Menu "Miscellaneous" - games and calendar are missing (I don't need them)
  • Every menu header has "±1" (+-1) at the right side (sense: when you change a numerical value, this is a helper: use zoom-out/zoom-in to switch steps from +/-1 to ..10, ..100, ..1k=1000, ..10k). This helper was in the top left corner of the screen before. I really should read the manual! thank you fe50!

What is better than in alpha 5:
  • badpixel.bin is created
  • raw files are all saved (oh - I don't know, what's inside: still no program to open them on my machine, DNG-files work)
  • changing shutter speed with script works now (e.g. with hdr-script)
  • I'm sure, there are more changes

Again: Thank you, hanulis!

Still problematic:
  • Video recording, optical zoom: zooming in works as expected, zooming out (optical) stops zooming function; switch to playback and back is needed to let zoom work again.
  • (minor) Symbols font: load size-16-symbols, when smaller text font is loaded stops symbols from being shown. Just found: this is connected with menu "OSD Parameters" - "Enable Symbols": this changes automatically.
  • Palette colors (for e.g. menu and text colors) in record and playback mode are not the same, sometimes they change when I'm only in playback mode (also in record mode?)
Ruedi

(Changes: corrected my error about symbols and my mistake about the "MODULES"-folder.)
(More changes: works also with 1.01c, some formatting, "±1", thank you fe50!)

Increment indicator.
This feature allows you to set the increment base for changing numeric values in the menu; you can set it to 1 (default value), 10, 100, 1k (1000), 10k (10.000) with the zoom lever...

If DCRAW based software like RawTherapee doesn't recognize the RAWs, enable CHDK's DNG support; DNG is supported by most imaging apps & viewers, also on all Adobe apps...

i have been using hanulis alpha omega build for a few days now and i am amazed! Thank you very much hanulis and anyone who contributed to this build! It's the first time i use chdk and it's really great!

I installed 1.0.1.b version on a european model with 1.0.1c firmware and worked!

As for the build:

I took raw and dng photos. But i can't find a program to open crw on linux. DNG works fine. Although,  i had a problem with some jpegs. While the content of dng was as expected, the jpegs looked like i used a weird overexposed light effect.

In Video Parameters, quality mode, worked only on 720p. On 1080p worked only for a few seconds, in my class 6 sd card. Probably would work on higher class. Zoom in & out worked as expected.

As for the Overrides (shutter speed, iso, aperture), a weird problem occurred. Override some times works fine, but others, it works only if i full press shutter button. If i half press it, the overrides values disappear. But when i enable self-timer, override work every time, as expected.

I played a bit with iso and it seems you can take pictures with iso as low as 40 or less and as high as 6400 or maybe more. But i don't know if the values are real.

fw=1.01b; chdk=alpha-omega-build
I just found a funny behavior with RAW DNG images: every second image is totally "overexposed" (only the jpg-part).
To reproduce:
a) Misc. - reset options to default AND Visual settings - reset files (-> restart camera!)
b) RAW - save RAW (+ raw in dir with jpg) + DNG format! + DNG file extension

This can be seen in the shot-review and the jpg.
exif-data of normal jpg and "overexposed" jpg are nearly the same (IrfanView showed me a value "JpegIFByteCount": is 3243 in the normal and 1568 in the "overexposed" image)
IrfanView showed the dng file and it was normal against the "overexposed" jpg! I attached a 50KBy image of a comparison (nearly the same detail of the picture, reduced data).

With "normal" RAW-settings all seems o.k.

Happy coding! Ruedi

As far as I understand the message of hanulis (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=6751.msg81198#msg81198), he has lost the sources of the alpha-omega build, so he will not easily be able to transfer the efforts of alpha-omega for 1.01b to the 1.01a- and 1.00c-sources (would need to disassemble the binary?). What I read was, that this build works (only partly?) also for 1.01c.

Hint for Stan: the DISKBOOT.BIN is loaded at sys-start, which means, your card needs to be prepared for that (see http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_for_Dummies#Card_Lock_Boot_Method). If you load chdk manually, it loads the version-5-PS.FI2, if it is still on the card.
Go to menu "Miscellaneous" - Show build info: it should show "CHDK Ver: CHDK 1.1.0" + "Date: Feb 8 2012" - this means, that your camera loaded the alpha-omega build.
4-GBy-card: special needs for the boot markers (see message http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=6751.msg78909#msg78909 and following messages).

> The "zoom in" "function" combination to toggle alt mode is pretty awkward.
Yes, it's tricky; you need some training to switch to alt-mode without the canon-menu sliding out (I'm seldom lucky).

DNG-files: if you can use IrfanView (in Windows, with the plugins-pack!), you can use it for viewing your files (I wasn't lucky with the CRW-files, but it is no need for me).

Question to sinak:
You wrote:
> Zoom in & out worked as expected.
...including mechanical/optical zoom by lens-moves (in contrast to the silent digital zoom)?

Have fun! Ruedi

(Changed: + link to "prepare card for auto-boot", + question to sinak.)
