Canon & E18 Error

Did you know lotsa people have problems with their canon P&S cams and the E18 error? just found it by accident by searching for instructions on disassembling my a620.

they even have an own site dedicated to that error: Canon E18 Error (Lens problem) - What is it and how to repair it
other sites:
Canon and the E18 Error / Lens Error, Restart Camera
The Juggle Zone: Bargain Blog: Canon E18 Error: Repair Instructions
full of complaining people. up to now i never heard of such problems, apparently it's having to do with stuck lenses/motors.
as in testing my chdk builds and debugging i very often power up my a620, and everytime in rec mode the lens is driven out. i wonder if this will have any effect on the lens, i really hope not.
but this is definitly one thing to remember when it comes to the "override your lens" scripts or features people coded or wish for. this might damage the hardware.
just wanted to let y'all know.

Yep, had this problem on my A70 for about two years now. One or more hits to the left side manages to straighten it out sometimes. Then the lens got stuck and I used some pliers to rotate it into the right direction. Finally I was sick with it since people (on the plane for example) were looking at me as why I'm repeatedly hitting the camera.
Then two weeks ago I tried to resolve the problem by disassembling. A ribbon from the zoom motor got pinched at some point and I didn't try to put it back together. All in all I have 36 tiny screws taped to a paper with neatly pen drawings of their position. Perhaps some parts can be used in robotics.

hah! today i had that e18 error. i used teleconverter and forgot to screw on a second "adapter ring" that comes with it. bang, lens could not fully "erect" and gave a beep and the e18 error. luckily turning the camera off and on again fixed the problem. phew!

I would like to do the same with my A540.

Does anyone know if deactivating the E18 error is possible in chdk?

I think the cameras sense lens position based upon movement of the lens motor.  I autopsied a dead a70 and there were no sensors in the lens mechanisim itself or the gears.

There is a long thread about this on the forum starting at http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=5720.msg71536#msg71536.  It goes on for several pages.

And if you haven't done so, I would suggest that you also google for  "Canon E18 Len Error"  There is lots of stuff out there about things to try.
