An idea: If a android device supports usb otg, then it would be sufficient to switch the otg port between host and device mode to trigger the camera. Actual usb communication would not be necessary.

But then again, usb otg support in android devices is probably very rare....

understood :(
thought USB host + host cable would finally do the magic (galaxy note).

This should work with the CHDK PTP extension, but you have to implement the client side of the PTP protocol. I'm not sure whether you can do this on a non-rooted device using the regular android USB API. On a rooted device, you could probably port one of the existing clients without too much trouble (assuming android doesn't do something really weird with the USB stack). You'd still need to do more work to provide a proper android UI though.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

"USB OTG" is the name for a device which supports both host and device mode. So Galaxy Note does support USB OTG.

If the Galaxy Note has the ability to turn the USB port on/off, then that shold technically be sufficient to enable remote trigger, since remote trigger simply listens for the availability of power on the USB port.
Maybe there is even such an option available in the Galaxy note settings? If you can find such a setting in Galaxy Note, then it should work today.

Look for a setting called something like disable USB port, disable USB power, disable USB host mode, or disable USB OTG.

If there is no such setting, then someone would have to write an app to enable/disable the USB port, which may or may not actually be possible.
