sx30is 60 second shot in manual locked by default script

I'm a newbie who is most interested in taking longer shots on my sx30is.

I am having problems getting the camera to actually take a 60 second photo in Manual.  When I hit ALT and  press the shutter the camera does not snap any photos.  Instead the screen says, "This is a default script. Scripts run when the shutter is pressed in ALT mode.  Press shutter to exit."

I have "Override shutter speed" set to "60" and Value factor set to "1"

It has not taken the photo when I check the card.

Thanks.

After messing around I think I may have figured it out.  I hit the FUNC SET key to snap the photo and not the shutter.  It's not entirely intuitive.  Thanks.

@americasroof

First set up the CHDK overrides, then LEAVE <Alt> mode and use the camera as usual - the CHDK overrides will be used when they are enabled...

While in <Alt> mode, the shutter button start/stop a CHDK script...
Read a bit in the CHDK manual: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_User_Manual

Thank you for what should have been obvious.

Anyway there's still a quirk that may or may not have been intentional.

When I press the shutter in manual mode with CHDK enabled (but alt turned off per above) it defaults to the 15 seconds I set it in the regular Manual menu no matter what CHDK settings I used.  When I use the self timer it shoots the entire 60 seconds.  That must have been what happened this morning when I was playing with the buttons and thought I had triggered it with the FUNC SET button.  I don't understand what happened but it works.

Again many thanks for the quick (and helpful) answer.

The override should work when you press the shutter whether the self-timer is used or not.
What firmware version do you have?

Phil.

Thanks for replying.  The firmware is sx30-100l-0.9.9-1308-full.zip.  I tried it in other modes (e.g., program, tv, etc., automatic) and it continued to use the camera setting and not the chdk 60 seconds (even though 60 seconds is showing in the upper left corner in orange).  Some of the other functions (e.g., raw, histogram, etc.) all seemed to work properly with the chdk parameters.  Thanks again.

Looks like there is a problem if you don't hold the shutter button half pressed long enough for the camera to calculate it's exposure. If you do a quick full shutter press the override is not getting set.

I think I found the problem - please try the attached version and let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the astonishingly quick and astonishingly proactive response!  This of course works.  This hack has breathed new life into my two canon cameras (I dropped my Lumix and its native 60 second exposure into the ocean during Hurricane Irene).   With this I'm getting stars in the photos -- much better than the Lumix!  Coupling this with the sx30is long lens there's all sorts of cool possibilities. Thanks!

P.S. the upside of the old timer release method was that it kept me from firing the camera in daylight with the long setting on.  The camera definitely needs to be on a tripod and fired by timer when on long exposure.

Again many thanks!
