this will need much more modifications to chdk than just a "silly switch CHDK command and reboot command". will definitly need more brains :)
i guess we can do it though, this forum is like a bottomless pool of infinite knowledge, ideas and wisdom. enough with the A$$kissing, let's get to work ;)

@mx3

Great news !
About the free memory, I always suspected that the 'free memory report' in CHDK only
reflects what is free for CHDK. But how will the Canon firmware - which is running parrallel
to CHDK - react to stealing it's buffer memory ?

It won't. I already did some tests (not really looking into the actual RAW file format, so I was just screwing around a bit)... I just wrote a lot of garbage (0xFFFFFFFF, whatever) somewhere within the RAW buffer every time gui_redraw() was called and I ended up with pictures with a strangely-colored line over them. So the RAW buffer is writable and the OS doesn't care what you write in there, it's only overwritten as soon as you take a picture, so it's ok for most things. If you really need something amazingly complex, you'll still have a few hundreds of kilobytes left (I think about 700 kB on my S5IS), which is a lot of memory.

wow, you're a fast "breeder". i hope i'm still up to see mx3 giving birth to a whole new chdk ;)

so the memory chdk hooks into right now isnt needed at all? it's a factory surplus,  created by hardware design, or to have some spare memory for future canon firmware releases, right? always wondered how chdk can fit into the cam, without breaking something or making it significantly slower. thanks for your information, guys.

I guess they just crammed in a standard 32MB SDRAM chip for $0.01, instead of ordering specially-designed, smaller chips in a non-standard format for lots more. It doesn't make sense to limit the amount of available memory like that and it's usually cheaper to go with the standard chips already available everywhere. Also, the RAW buffer seems to be in SDRAM, so in a way it's also to accomodate future cameras, since they'll likely have even larger sensors and therefore need more storage.

32Mb RAM, that's what my good old HP 48G calculator had.
It reminds me: In those days, brave fellas use to "upgrade" their calculator's memory from 32Mb to 256Mb by welding a memory chip just above the original one inside the calculator and it worked! They could keep much more games instead of downloading from PC every time. Could it be possible with the cameras?

My '48G only has 32kb :P

That is sooo true. I don't know what I was thinking. On those times we use to talk about kb, next thing you know it's Mb. Now nano ipods are measured in Gb.

And it is never enough!

Well, I guess welding more memory to the camera is not the answer. Let's see what happens with this CHDK multiple builds booting thing.

You people are spoiled, my very first computer had a whopping 2K of RAM and that was plenty. :)

"640 Kb should be enough for anyone"
cit..

No news on developments or just talk?

ciao a tutti.
