In general I was using intervalometer and shoot a lot of pictures for a few hours. Then they were merged in gimp using layer setting 'lighten only'. This causes light pixel addition without touching dark ones.

Ah right, I was thinking of a long exposure on the camera.

I will combine my images now and see what they look like.

PS: I looked up DFS, Dark-frame subtraction, reduce noise by taking a picture with the shutter closed and removing the lit pixels.

Also, I didn't fancy putting hundreds of images in gimp one at a time so a quick google gave me this.

This is what I have so far http://imgur.com/a/G7eCe

Just from old images,  I used StarStax http://starstax.net

Very long time exposure has one inconvenience - trails are almost not visible because the background - sky - is not completely dark.

DFS might be good idea, since on some cameras on very long exposures you can see really high artifacts. On my sx130 when shutter time is > 10 min I can observe beautifull violet from the top-left corner :)

PS - you gave me idea to write my own stacking soft - this could be acheived simply with Processing language:

http://processing.org/

However - I have no idea when I'll have time for it...

I love processing.

I will give it a go too, image manipulation is not my best coding asset however.

Worth a shot tho

This was my 1st attempt at a star trail, only left my sx40 out for about 45 mins to see if my settings were correct, I'll maybe try the dfs. Set for 10 sec exposures every 25 secs and 200 iso

Brizo -

What did you use for post-processing?

Thanks!

I just used the star trail software to stack the photos, didn't do anything else with them
