Your camera performs several corrections in software when it coverts the data from the sensor into a JPEG, including correction of barrel distortion.  It is typically worse when the lens is zoomed to the wide angle position.  Doing this allows the manufacturer to use less expensive lens systems and still get acceptable results for most people.

CHDK RAW is just the data taken directly from the sensor - no corrections - so its up to you to do it in software on your PC.   Search this forum and you will find a lot of discussion on this topic.

Hello everyone,

I was trying to find a description of what exactly is different in the CHDK firmware for the SX40 in comparison to the original firmware - but I could not find any such description on this website. I'm sure this must be written somewhere, so could anyone please point me to an address where the exact changes in this version are presented? Many thanks!

CHDK is not firmware.  Its software that gets loaded into a camera's RAM and act to augment the camera's firmware.  Which would be why you cannot find what you are looking for.

Right - that's what I meant, sorry :-p So where can I see exactly what the CHDK adds to the firmware?
