Yes you are correct. Udumper 2008 turned out to be a success.  There are several dumps of 1.01b now. (and the possibly less usual 1.00e)

As for how long it would take, thats more or less impossible to answer. There still hasn't been word that anyone is actually working on it. I'm almost certain that the A590 will run chdk sooner or later and hopefully someone with the needed skills will give it a shot soon. But remember that porting DryOS cameras is a time consuming task.

why should 1.00e be less usual - is there some version overview available? Or, is there a possibility to update from 1.00e to a higher version (and any well known reason to do so)?

My A590 still has version 1.00e. Tried to prepare for dumping last night until I recognized that the 32 MB MMC card sold with the camera doesn't have a write protection switch ;)

This is pure speculation but whats known is that the 1.00e is dated Jan 8 2008 and the 1.01b is dated Jan 24. If I'm not mistaken the camera was announced in January and released in March which lead me to believe that only the first batches were 1.00e. The initial A590's were all reported to be 1.01b cameras.

There seem to be more users with 1.00e cameras showing up so I may be wrong however. As for dumping it it's really not needed as there have been, as stated earlier, several dumps of both versions.

I bought my a570is when it was a mature model, soon to be replaced by the a590is and still got an 1.00e while an 1.01-something firmware exists. I like to think it's possible that many of these versions aren't bugfix revisions, but instead they could for example be there because Canon may need several software versions simultaneously in production to cope with alternate component sources (whoever sells them a batch of chips the cheapest gets the deal, but the alternatives may not be 100% compatible with each other) or because they want to do some localization on different continents.

Are there any news about porting the cam ? Would love to use chdk on this .

By the way, mine has the 1.00e firmware, too, purchased in July 2008 in Germany.

Two weeks ago I bought a canon powershot specially to use the CHDK, but I make a mistake and I bought a A590IS on Amazon. It has the firmware ver. 1.0.1.0.
I hope the CHDK will be able for that soon
