Yes - assuming you have setup your SD card to automatically boot CHDK using the SD card lock method.

Have tried putting it in the lock position and the screen says. Memory card locked no image.
You might want to take a few minutes and read through this :  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card

Hi Mad57

you don't really tell us enough. There are two ways of loading CHDK:

1. with the PS.FI2 file in the root directory of the card, you load CHDK using the 'Firmware Update' method each time you want to use it
2. with the DISKBOOT.BIN file in the root directory of the card and the card marked as bootable, CHDK will load automatically if the card is locked when you power on.

Sounds like you are trying to use method 2, but have not made the card 'bootable'. If you are using Windows then CardTricks will do that job - see http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CardTricks
If you have a Mac, my SDMInst app will do the job - see http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/clickpansdm/sdminst.html

And just to be sure you have the right version, my ACID utility will download it for you - just drop a photo taken with the camera on the ACID window - see http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/acid/acid.html

.. but only for SD cards 4G or less in size.

Hi. I used the card tricks method and selected make card bootable. As far as I am aware the hack loaded to the card but the card tricks part of the software didn't. Excuse me for sounding a bit dumb but I followed this link.
Canon powershot sx40hs step 17 checking firmware and installing chdk. Should the card tricks also be on the sd card? Locked or unlocked?

I suggest you ignore the suggestion to use CardTricks.  Its an old utility that does not support larger SD cards or FAT32 booting on new cameras like yours.

The best description of the steps you should follow for your camera is probably here for "Firmware Update" method of loading CHDK:

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card#Firmware_Update_Method_Card_Preparation

and here for  the Bootable SD Card method :

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card#For_cameras_released_after_2010_:

Are you using a Mac or a PC ?
