My problem is that the camera says that the memory card is locked, even though it should be locked to load CHDK on startup.
That means the card is not formatted to be "bootable".

Quote
Does CHDK autoboot support 64 GB memory cards?
It should.

However,  none of us can afford to purchase a card that large so its probably never been tested  8)

All kidding aside,  is it possible that the card is being formatted in the camera as exFAT rather than FAT32 ? You can only boot from a FAT32 formatted card - you will have to format the card in your PC as FAT32 if that's the case rather than in the camera.
.

You are right! The card is in exFAT rather than FAT32. Strange that chdk could make it "bootable" then?
Yeah, and my PC will not give the option of formatting it to FAT32.

Making it bootable just means writing a short string into the boot sector header.   If the format is wrong in the first place,  the Canon firmware will never see that string.

You'll need something like this :

Not tested - just the first one a google search turned up.  There may be better ones.

Then try the "make bootable" option on the camera.

I've yet to find a piece of software that works for this purpose. The most promising one is Eeseus Partition Master, but it doesn't recognize my SD card.
Edit: Now it works! I needed to use an external card reader for Easeus to recognize it. Now I am finally able to boot with chdk! Thanks for your help, very quick.

Did you try this :    http://partition-magic.soft32.com/

Update :  Sorry :  won't work on Vista or Win7.     I  usually use the Linux versions - gparted or  qtparted - you could run that from a bootable Linux CD like http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage

You'll need to provide more information for anyone to be able to help.
What firmware version is your camera?
What CHDK version are you using?
What Canon and CHDK settings are you using?
What actions cause a crash (scripts, still photos, video, etc)?

Can you dump a ROMLOG from the crash (Miscellaneous stuff --> Debug Parameters menu)?
If so upload it here.

Phil.

I feel like a moron but I can't for the life of me get the blasted thing loaded properly into my camera.

I have version I in my camera so I downloaded the proper file.

I copied all the stuff into the cameras memory card.

I put the card back in my camera and turn on in playback mode.

I see the version of my camera.

I go to the menu screen and.......no firmware update!

I've tried all types of unpacking with no luck. Every time I try the "press the playback button twice"(I'm guessing it's the second button down on the right side of the back of the camera) method it just turns the camera off and on again.

Am I unpacking something wrong???

For the firmware update booting method to work,  there must be a file called "ps.fi2" in the root directory of your SD card.  (This file contains CHDK).   Check to see its there using the SD card reader in your computer.

The other requirement is to start the camera by pressing the playback button (rather than the On/Off button) to turn your camera on.

Also, what kind of a computer are you using to load you SD card - PC,Mac or Linux ?

I'm using a mac.

When the card is plugged into my computer I have -
-DCIM folder
-DISKBOOT.BIN
-PS.FI2
Nothing else as I figured at this point I'll start with the small version instead of the complete version.

I've started in playback mode. No Firm update...

I'm starting to think I'll need to find a friend with a PC to properly format the CHDK.

That looks okay.

The small version is provided for people who already have the full version installed and only need to update the two core CHDK executable file (plus the modules in the dev version).  Its not a good idea to just use that version although that's not causing your problem.
