Does the latest build make it possible to take time exposures with ISO >100 and exposures longer than 1 second? Since I want to do astrophotography, this limitation could be a deal-killer.

Thanks!

Yes, you can override the ISO in the CHDK menu and this will bypass the Canon limit of ISO 100.

Phil.

I have the sx40 firmware 1.00i.  I'm able to take raw files DNG (created the badpixel.bin), and able to process raw file in photoshop.  so it works, however the problem is that if I don't use the camera for a few minutes, it goes off by itself, either sleep mode or off mode (i'm not sure), and when I try to wake it back up, it's automatically out of hack mode.  The menu doesn't even have reload firmware. I can't get back into hack mode.  the only way to get back into hack mode is by opening the battery door fully, then do the whole routine again.

Is my camera shipped with a different firmware?  or is it the hack firmware 1.00i.   The crux of the problem is that after the camera goes into sleep mode, it kicks me out of hack mode and so I can't take any more raw.  :'(

You have started CHDK manually. On every start you must repeat the CHDK start procedure. Without this procedure you have no CHDK.

For an automatic CHDK start you must prepare the SD card. Read more about CHDK:

can you tell me where exactly to read because I did read enough manuals and did many hours of hunting.  Many others will appreciate it.  I looked at the auto start script, but that didn't work as I wanted..  can someone tell me if it's possible to really press the on button or whatever button and get it automatically in hack mode without fussing with it?  I did prepare the sd card and was able to shoot raw, but I can't stand having to go through the hack every time by opening the camera battery door.  there's got to be a better way..

MSL: it would help to point out in those documents where you think this can be accomplished "For an automatic CHDK start you must prepare the SD card. Read more about CHDK."  I searched and I looked!

Can someone please help me out here.  Thank you.

update:  is this what you're talking about?? "How can I make the CHDK program load automatically at startup"

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ  (you notice I actually spent the time to type in the URL for other newbie's benefit??  How hard is the request??)

this is buried in the FAQ pile.  this sucks the way it's documented.. who would dig all the way that deep??  CHDK is worst than linux..it drives a person insane.  why can't this be in the short start up documentation and put it near the top?  This is a very common question everyone would have.  and for the record, my experience with CHDK has been really frustrating to say the least.
