some questions before i start

Just found this forum because i was dissapointed by the fact my Powershot SX30 IS does not support RAW format.
now i have done some reading around and i still had some questions. it might be already answered within some FAQ that i have overlooked.

1) i have understand that this CHDK is some kind of add-on to the original firmware, or does it really overwrite the original one?
2) how do i make a correct backup from the camera before i flash it with CHDK firmware? in case something goes wrong, i dont want to end up with a book-stopper camera taht i cant use anymore.
3) if i in the future want to remove CHDK again, can it just be uninstalled, and will the camera then be back to original firmware ?

CHDK loads in RAM.  The firmware in your camera is never touched.  Basically,  the camera is tricked into starting CHDK rather than its normal firmware and then CHDK sets itself up - running in RAM - and returns control of the camera to the original firmware having "hooked" itself in temporarily.

You are not flashing your camera when you load CHDK.  The camera EEPROM is not touched - CHDK loads into the camera's RAM.  While CHDK is experimental,  it is extremely unlikely to have any permanent effect.  Also,  there is no know way to backup your camera's original firmware anyway.

Just delete it from your SD card.  No uninstall needed - no way to tell it was ever there.

ok thanks
just one more question:
looking at this page: http://mighty-hoernsche.de/
where i can download the CHDK, i see it for SX30, but not for SX30 IS.
for CHDK there is no difference between the IS and non-IS version ?

I believe that they are the same thing - the IS stand for Image Stabilization (as far as I know) and there is no sx30 without that.

Don't forget to figure out which firmware version you have.

If the logo shows, then it's working. I suggest reading the manual to learn how to access the CHDK menu and options.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

hehe
alright, got it working.

seems i have to start it in playback mode every time i start the camera, and then activate it.

stupid thing is, i dont know how to exit the playback mode and goto in photo mode, without it reboots first, and so it gets disabled again :/

and not yet found out how to make it auto start hehe :P

still a lot to read in the wiki  ::)

Edit 1:
mm i have this SD card:

if i correctly understand, this can not made bootable right ?
only lower then 8GB can?

With the very newest camera, you can make cards larger that 4G bootable.  For the rest,  including yours,  you have to set-up two partitions - a small FAT16 partition that is bootable and a larger FAT32 partition that takes up the rest of the card..  The second link I just posted above explains how to do that.
