Help me enhance my best-price Canon Powershot A3000 IS with CHDK guys ;)

Hi  :),

I need a helpful hand. I'm interested in HDR photos, I'm using a Canon Powershot A3000 IS I bought for €70, and already posted HDR photos for my panoramio account : www.panoramio.com/user/2398318. These are the 2 more recent pages of HDR photos, processed without a tripod, without RAW, without bracketing since Canon Powershot A3000 IS lacks of bracketing.I used Photomatix and another software (uh, what's the name again lol) I'm quite a newbie, so the 3 shots don't fit, because I have not the hands of a superhero to handle the buttons and don't move..

So I want to apply CHDK to my camera :xmas, but I don't know how to do that.

I used a program to determine what firmware version has my camera with a single photo but it doesn't give me the required information. It does not gave me 1.00B, C or D.

Then, I know one SD has to be as low as 2GB or less. I have 8GB but does it work if i format it as 2GB? (I can do that). Because when I tried to update the camera's boot with any file inside of the SD, nothing happened, and every keystroke on the camera didn't change anything.

So I need a helpful hand to guide me through all the steps  :haha thank you guys

Did you use my ACID program (http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/acid/acid.html) to determine what build you needed? If it didn't work please post more details so I can fix it.

ACID will not only tell you what build you need, but download it for you. Then all you have to do is install it. You can install it on an 8GB card, but the card needs to be formatted with two partitions - a small FAT16 one (16MB) to hold DISKBOOT.BIN (the CHDK code) and the rest as FAT32 to hold photos.

If you have a Mac, use my SDMInst app (http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/clickpansdm/sdminst.html) to do the formatting and installing. If you have a WIndows machine, download this zip file (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/file/common_files.zip) and unzip it,  copy the SDMInst.exe file it contains to the folder containing the downloaded build and run  it. SDMInst will do the formatting and installing for you

There is another ways to get your firmware version if you are interested :

link> Determining the firmware version in your camera.

And if you don't like the idea of dealing with dual partitions,  the largest FAT16 partition size  that will book CHKD is 4G ( not 2G) so you can format your 8G card as 4G and use it that way if its more convenient for you.

I found the firmware figures. Thank you waterwingz for your link, though.

Thank you Zeno. (It wasn't your software, but I could'nt use yours as I just tried on my Windows PC. The batch file is looking for Javaw, which is not included in the zip archive, so I couldn't load the JAR inside.)

I've just launched the program I talked about again. It's called "Camera Version". The info I got last time is:

-Firmware Revision : 1.00 rev 4.00

But now I have another info in bold blue characters that didn't show up last time before I had to reinstall my PC :

PowerShot A3000 IS            version 100 D

So I guess my camera is 1.00D. at last  ;)

Now, I'll be okay to format my SD as 4 GB or less.

I think I'll have to put several files inside, and make the camera boot up with these files. I think these files are available on another topic, and I will try and find them. Or maybe you know where the lateste version is, can you tell me? And then, what are the keys I should press?

PowerShot A3000 IS            version 100 D
I guess rev 4.00  meant "D" assuming rev 1 was A,  rev 2 was B and rev 3 was C.

Thank you all. I'm done installing CHDK on my camera.

It was a bit tricky to load it from a 8GB card. If you have only this availiable, you'll have to lower its capacities with Diskpart in Windows. [WINKEY+R type DISKPART] then LIST DISK, SELECT DISK X (X as the number of your SD drive, look carefully ar it as you risk to harm your HD instead), SELECT PARTITION 1, DELETE PARTITION, then CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=3900, then format as FAT16 (FAT) in Windows Explorer then load Cardtricks without formatting with Cardtricks.

Now, I can run CHDK on my camera, but I touched all the buttons and it says :

This is a default script. Scripts run when shutter is pressed in ALT mode.
Press shutter to exit.

Can I disable this warning? I can start the alternate menu but I can't shoot photos.

And I found the  bracketing menu difficult to understand.. 2 2/3ev? 3ev?

thanks :)

all right I found how to enable/disable alt menus mode by the SELECT FACE key.. now I will look at bracketing but I don't know how to make that works.

I also shot one picture in raw (.CRW) and these can be used for HDRs.

Thank you all for answering me. I had the chance to use bracketing. Without tripod, but much better than before ;)

I have using issues now. With managing bracketing now, so I will be reading the links fe50 just posted to me.

An odd issue too with the one out of the shots that's EV+2. This is blurred. Even before I had CHDK, the "mise au point" (how do I say this in English? lol) didn't work when I shot EV+2 pictures, the problem occured mainly by night. I need to know how to fix that..
