Could you make new DSLRs compatible with old lenses?

Hello all,

as far as I understood from reading the forum, the development is still not that far (you have added no features yet), but everything is focused around high ISO, metering modes...

My suggestion is, whether you could also look into the body/lens communication protocol. There is a bunch of old, optically amazing Sigma lenses (I happen to have a 400/5,6 and a 1000D), that are of limited use with new DSLRs (from 20D/300D upwards), because they aperture cannot be set (an attempt to do so hangs the camera), reportedly due to a change in the body/lens communication at Cannon's side. So could a firmware change be done to revert to the old protocol (pre-20D)?  Or, if this is not possible, to at least make the camera to ignore the error (I can actually set the aperture, using an old film body and removing the lens in the right moment, but I can make only one picture, then the camera hangs and needs to be power-cycled).

Thanks!
Jan

Since there hasn't been any replies, I'd like to support your question. Is the protocol actually contained in the firmware? If so, could some parts be overriden/switched on and off?
Another possible workaround in this case would be if the camera wouldn't recognize that there are actually more apertures to be set than wide open.

(In my case, I'm talking about the 350d)
