You can buy a USB OTG cable for the Nexus 7 tablet on eBay for a couple of pounds/Euros/dollars.

I use that and a small card reader to transfer my photos at end of each day when on holiday.

I'm currently in Italy doing just that.
Good to know. Out of curiosity, can you download images directly from the camera with that?
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Just tried it with my Nexus 7, OTG cable connected to a standard USB cable, and my A1200.   The tablet recognized the camera right away and asked for permission for the built-in Album app to download the pixtures.  I pressed "Agree" and it quickly downloaded everything from the camera to the tablet.

I'm now really glad you asked that question!

I guess I should see if it transfers DNG images too.

I guess I should see if it transfers DNG images too.
It will presumably be subject to the normal PTP listing rules, meaning that:
1) The DNGs will have to be named with a prefix/suffix the camera recognizes.
2) The camera will need to be rebooted between shooting and attempting to download.
The tablet may still get confused if the file is actually a DNG but has some other extension, or refuse to download things it doesn't recognize.

If you can't get a prefix/suffix extension that's recognized on a PC, there's probably no point trying it on the tablet.

The other question is whether you can copy images from the album app to an external storage device. I suspect this should be possible with a file manager app, but going directly from the the camera to an external device (using a hub) may not be.

This also raises the possibility of making a chdkptp client for these devices.

I was going to see if any of the 3 or 4 file manager apps I have will do better.

When I was first learning about OTG cables,  they were being used to connect mice & keyboards.  People also tried USB stick & external hard drive but the results were mixed at best.

Yes.   My 10.4" tabs all had proper USB host ports (Toshiba Thrive and Acer Iconia) but the development project is the same I think.

The extension / prefix stuff is mostly dependent on the camera firmware behavior, not the client. Of course the android client may have additional issues on top of that.

I would suggest first verifying that you can see the files over standard PTP (not using a CHDK extension client) on a PC before trying anything on the tablet. You could use gphoto2 or ptpcam for this.

edit:
Apologies if I'm belaboring the obvious, just trying to save you time and frustration.

Thanks.  Not planning on spending too much time "swimming upstream" here.  Getting JPG's direct from cam to tablet is huge.  Not being a big RAW/DNG user when shooting snapshots,  I'm done here.

Not at all.  I already have flat spots on my forehead from banging it on the desk with CHDK stuff over the last couple of years.  Please feel free to belabor the obvious at will.
