will the arm compiler that comes with android SDK work? is there really a need for the complete gcc toolchain?

anyone else in this forum compile for OSX?  has decent makefile? or Xcode proj?

AFAIK the android SDK doesn't come with a C compiler. Assuming you mean the NDK, the answer is probably not, but if you really want to find out you'd have to try it. IIRC that some people have used off the shelf toolchains successfully, but chdk tends to be a bit picky about how it's toolchain is configured.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
