Hi,

I have a thouthand files taken with a Canon G12 + CHDK in .CR2 raw format.
I cannot read these files with any of my RAW converter, including dcraw v8.99

I have been advised to use the .DNG format instead. I shall do it.
However, I need to read the old .CR2 files

Please help.

Make sure you have an updated version of Adobe Camera RAW. Try updating it to the latest version and see if that works.

Thanks for the advise.

Neither dcraw 9.13 nor Adobe Camera Raw (today's download: v6.5) can read the .CR2 from the G12.
Note that I have other .CR2 from a 5D (the older Mk1). Those are correctly processed by dcraw and Adobe's software

Are you using CHDK raw, or the G12s native raw setting ? The CHDK 'save raw' option only affects CHDK raw, on cameras like the G12 which natively support raw, the native raw is controlled in the standard canon firmware and not affected by the CHDK option.

If you are shooting CHDK raw (not native canon raw) then it is not actually in CR2 format. See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Raw

If you are shooting raw using the Canon firmware (which is probably a good idea) then you need to find software that supports the actual canon format.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

To convert CHDK RAW files to DNG format (lossless, readable with Adobe PS) read more here:

Hi guys,
Thanks for the support.

I shot CHDK RAW. not Canon Raw.

I know G12 has native RAW format but I needed CHDK timer and I did not know at the moment how to get both of CHDK timer and Canon RAW. Anyway, this is a separate issue.

Following the lates advise to date, I tried DNG4PS. I did as follows:
* take 3 sample files in both formats CR2-from-CHDK  and  Jpeg,
* copy them together in a new folder,
* reboot on windows (DNG4PS not exists for Lunix 64-bits platforms)
* download DNG4PS
* run on that folder

no conversion done
then try this:

* scroll the list of cameras -> last G-series is G7. I have G12
* setup the camera -> I do not have all the details, especially the bayer-matrix type

As said, latest dcraw (9.12) cannot read my files. (Understandable since the CHDK Raw file does do not have Exif data.)

Forr those who legitimately wonder why I so desperately want to read those RAW files when I have the Jpegs, here is the answer. The thouthand-ish images were taken in September with a kite. I am doing the stereo calculations on this set of images. Jpeg compression is ruining the precision of this kind of calculation. I have done it though. the result is beautiful. But I need to redo the entire workflow from the raw images to get the precision I need.

simply because the (temporary) result is wonderful (even using the bloody Jpegs instead of raw), I am glad to share it: This is a shaded map of the soil elevation. The area is +/- 500m aside, filled with 4,000,000 calculates points (one at every 25 cm).

BTW, please help me to read the CHDK CR2 raws.
Thanks

Lizard,
could you upload one of your CHDK RAW files somewhere, e.g. on zShare ?

Run DNG4PS2, click in the settings button, go to the camera options tab.
Select the G7 profile and click the copy button.
Change the settings as:
Camera Name = Canon PowerShot G12
Short Name = PowerShot G12
Sensor size = 3744 x 2784
Jpeg size = 3684 x 2760
Active zone x1, y1 = 52, 12
Active zone x2, y2 = 3736, 2772
Black-white level = 127, 4095
Mosaic type = Red,Green,Green,Blue
Bits per unit = 12
Color matrix 1
Illuminant = Daylight
Matrix = 1.324400 -0.550100 -0.124800 -0.150800 0.985800 0.193500 -0.027000 0.108300 0.436600
Multiplicator  = 1.0 1.0 1.0
Color matrix 2, leave blank

Click Ok, and you should be able to browse to the directory with the raw and jpeg files and run the convert. If have both the raw and jpeg together you will get additional EXIF data copied to the DNG file from the JPEG.

Works !
Many, many thanks for the support.

Let me summarize the procedure for newcomers who will land here after a search:

title: conversion from .CR2 raw files written by CHDK with a Canon Powershot G12

1) do this first : get in the same folder the Jpeg files and the CR2 files. Jpegs files might be in the form IMG_1234.JPG and the .CR2 files in the form CRW_1234.CR2

2) do as detailed above by philmoz.

3) set the Path to Raw Files and the DNG output files (set to the same folder. it worked for me)
clic Scan (or Rescan)
if the .Jpeg files and the .CR2 files are correctly paired, you will see the 'raw-file list' populated
clic convert.
enjoy.

4) Next time you shoot raw, set the output format to dng instead of raw right in the camera.
