was looking at buying an a495 but then saw that a490 seems to be the same with features crippled, so does chdk on a 490 level the playing field? are the optics/sensor the same?

just asking before I splash the extra $15 ......

I suspect the optics are identical, but CHDK doesn't directly add back the features that exist on a495 but not a490.

Look at the comparison table in http://www.dpreview.com/news/2010/1/5/canona490_a495 it appears the differences are
9 point AF vs 5
Additional shooting modes: Face Self timer and Poster effect
Don't forget what the H stands for.

yeah i was looking for a camera for some night timelapse, found a very good video on youtube with the a495 going for like 4 days, and i quiet liked its night/star performance right at the end, so was going to buy one just for this.

i can do it with my sx30is, but its cold out, if i come indoors it could get stolen, so the cheaper 495 i would not worry about so much, plus i plan on driving it out to a big local hill away from the city, coming home and collecting in the morning, if the weather changed i'd had a wet cam....

had a browse, cant confirm the sensor is the same, so will have to cross the 490 off the shopping list

Just my 2 cents worth,  but if you are willing to risk it getting stolen or rained on,  it does not seem like such a big step to take a risk on the sensor being acceptable for what you want to do ?
