Can't seem to take RAW with my PowerShot SX200IS

As far as I know I have done everything by the book, but obviously I haven't.

I have downloaded the correct file and used cardtrick to format my card and install chdk. I have gone through the process of updating the firmware and everything seems fine. I can access chdk menu etc and when I press the disp. button the camera appears to toggle between RAW  and jpg, but when I take shots that I think are in RAW and then download to my PC with either Canon's facility, or Adobe Bridge, or even by copying and pasting with explorer, all I see are jpegs.

The only thing that I can think I am doing wrong is that I have used a 4G card and I don't think that cardtrick partitioned it. I am sure CHDK is a wonderful program so what am I doing wrong?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

If you are able to load CHDK and work through the menus, then your card is partitioned correctly.

What you don't seem to realize is that you cannot access RAW images using the USB port on your camera - regardless of what software you try on your PC.  The camera knows nothing about RAW - CHDK created those images.

You need to pull the SD card from your camera, put it in an SD card reader on your PC and access the images that way.

And yes,  to anticipate your next question, its quite possible that you might not be able to open them in PhotoShop.

Thanks for your fast response and solution to my problem. I've put the card in the laptop card reader and I can see everything, and no; I'm not going to ask if I can see them in Photoshop because I can. I had already read that the CHDK RAW format is none standard, so I have set the camera to produce DNG and everything is fine.

I hadn't realised just how much the jpeg images get manipulated in the camera, including some lens correction.

I am used to shooting in RAW because as well as having my SX200IS I also have a Canon EOS 40D which I use in RAW all the time. I find it very useful for improving the expsure of very dark and very light areas, by using layers in Photoshop. I'm not keen on using HDR because of the somewhat strange results that are often obtained.

Thank you once again for your helpfull advice
