a570 Infinity Focus Problem

Hi everyone,
I purchased an a570is on eBay and whenever I try to use infinity focus, whether it be through CHDK or the camera's built-in firmware, the images are out of focus. For the life of me, I can't figure out why (i think it must be mechanical), and I am returning the camera now. But, besides the focus issue I really like this camera. Does anyone else who has this camera have the same problem? If so is there a workaround? And lastly, would anyone be kind enough to take a picture with their a570 set to infinity focus through CHDK and the Canon FW and post them here? I would be eternally grateful!

Thanks so much!

Hi,
I don't have the a570.
But if it can't focus to infinity without chdk I don't think is going to work with chdk either. It could be a mechanical problem.

Try (without chdk) to take some pictures in landscape mode and see what you get.

You can also try this from a lua script:

--[[
--]]
sleep(1000)
set_focus(65535)
sleep(1000)
shoot()

There are some images here but none taken in landscape mode:

I hope this helps

The pictures were still blurry in landscape mode, so it must've been a mechanical problem. That's the only reasonable explanation. Thanks for your response!

You mentioned you got it on ebay. If someone repaired it with parts from other cameras (e.g. swapping boards or lens hardware), a factory calibration would normally be needed. Unfortunately, only Canon service has the software to do this.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

I suppose that is a possibility as well. So I should not be concerned that buying another a570is might have the same focusing issue?

I had the same problem with a SX30IS a SX100IS and a SX40HS. Pictures taken in auto focus are sharp. If I use the Canon manual focus at infiniy or auto focus at the moon, it willbe out of focus in manual mode. If I look at the EXIF I get the same value.
Since I got that problem on 3 different camera I suspect it is a common problem not senn because few people une manual focus.
The picture of the moon included show the difference before and after with a SX30IS.

Here is another example showing auto focus and manual focus  with the zoom at 35X.

Can you try this with and without CHDK ?

Infinity focus with CHDK and with Canon manual focus gives the same results. My SX30 was repaired by Canon. I bought a SX40HS and Ihad the same problem. I returned it today.
