Curious CHDK behaviour on SX40 Firmware 1.00l

Hi, I'm a recent convert to Canon. One of my reasons for changing was the availability of CHDK. Having read all the documentation and watched the various Youtube vids I installed it last week and it worked perfectly.

Today I wanted to activate the RAW mode which was successful. I then went in to the options to change when RAW was used. As far as I know that's all I did. But now when I turn the camera on CHDK is booted and I can select all the menus but can't record any images. When I press the shutter I get a rolling text in the lower left of the screen that says 'This is the default script. Scripts run when the shutter is pressed in ALT mode. Press shutter to exit.' But the only thing the shutter does is to start and interrupt the message.

I've downloaded the latest beta file but it does the same. I've also tried it with a number of different SD cards, and different installation methods but with the same result.

I'd be most grateful if you could throw some light on this problem.

TIA.

If you press the shutter while in <ALT> mode then CHDK activates the currently loaded script (the default script in your case).   You need to exit <ALT> mode to use the shutter button normally.  If you have RAW enabled,  then RAW images will also be stored.

Thanks for the reply. I think I partly understand what you are saying because when I had RAW set up even when ALT was off images were recorded in RAW. But the camera is not behaving as it did when I first installed CHDK. I could select ALT and record images in that mode but now I'm not able to do that. I thought you had to be in ALT mode to use the CHDK functions.

Thanks again.

You only need to be in <ALT> mode to use the CHDK setup menus and to run scripts. All the rest of the CHDK functionality works in regular camera mode if its enabled.

Thank you soooo much waterwingz. I had a fundamental misapprehension about the way CHDK works   :-[

Your help greatly appreciated. I shall carry on 'experimenting'.

Thanks and regards.

[/quote)  Just a quick question, I know that I have chdk loaded but I can't seem to get the sx40 to turn on. Meaning I push the play key and chdk loads. I picked up on your comment ( if it's loaded ). How do I enable my sx40? As you can tell by the question I am a newbie. Firmware 100 I. Thanks for any help you can provide. Bookcat  :

Can you rephrase your question please ?

First you say that you cannot get your sx40 to turn on.  Then you say you push the play key and CHDK loads.  How can that be if you cannot get your camera to turn on ?

Sorry about the confusion. I can't get the lens to move out after chdk loads. I can move through all of the menus but I am not clear how to take pictures. Thanks for your Patience. Bookcat

I didn't read whole thread, but did you try to turn on camera by PLAY (review) button or on/off? Try to use on/off button but hold it pressed for 2-3 sec. Camera should then start in shooting mode.

Also - you can always press shoot_half button to enter the shooting mode, but you have to be NOT in ALT mode.

And as the last way - turn the mode dial (if your camera has it).

A big thank you to outslider. Holding the on off button down for the 2 to 3 sec worked. Now a new experience is about to begin thanks to you. Is there any info to read on how to learn about the many new features my camera will have?
