SX130IS CDHK updrade did NOT work

Hi all

Downloaded both "D" & "F" upgrades and neither worked

Got to menu and firmware - but shown needed go from 1.0.1 to 1.1 and neither downloads worked.

It was a new 8GB SDHC card - even after first failure reformatted it fat32 and again it failed

Had to change the batteries twice during these upgrades

Can anyone point me in the right direction for another try.

Would really love to shoot raw images with the camera.

Used my Acer Netbook card reader and unpacked the zip files to the card reader SDHC card - IF this was right or wrong just do not know. (did NOT copy paste.

Cheers for years
Colin

You need to determine which Canon firmware version your camera has. The letter versions are not CHDK versions, they tell you which Canon firmware that build must be used with.

You mention you tried D and F, maybe your camera is C.

What do you mean ? The numbers shown are irrelevant, they don't tell you about a "need' for anything. What specifically do you mean by "didn't work" ?

You need to put the files on the root of the SD card. If the firm update menu appeared, you probably did that correctly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since booting only works on FAT16 volumes ( for Your and my Cam's), and the maximum size for FAT16 is 4GB (and that's non-standard), booting from an SD card larger than 4GB is more complicated.
By dividing a >4GB card into multiple partitions (volumes), one can have a small FAT16 partition ....
Read here:
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card
I have also SX130IS with 8Gb SDHC card -two patritions, first FAT16 2Mb or more, second the rest of the card FAT32.And I use only Diskboot.bin file (not PS.FI2) because first partitition is boottable.

He was trying to use firm update, which works on any size partition. But you have to do it manually every time you want to use CHDK.

If you  want autoboot, then the information you posted applies.

Thanks  reyalp & Pier

reyalp - I Believe there may be an OOPS on MY part here as the camera was show from here http://web.canon.jp/imaging/dcp/firm-e/pssx130is/index.html to be --->>>
Also, products with the number "1" or higher in the sixth digit from the left in the serial number already have the updated firmware; so this update does not apply to those products (this phenomenon will not occur).

The 6th # on mine is a "2" Which I believe was the 1.0.1 and therefore is a "C" - but whether it can be upgraded l;eaves me puzzled again.

Pier

Did not realize that update had to be put on Fat16 partition - and will have to check about partitioning the card

Boy what a lengthy rigamarole to get a 2MB fat 16 partition - would have to use the netbook and a Gparted Livecd as it only has Win7 on it.
And do not know if the Gparted Livecd would see the SDHC card - have never tried that before.

Although will look at if a fat16 can be done through Win 7

Shoot this is getting to be quite a saga eh???

ps & Thanks Reylap - yes would want it to be AUTOMATIC

Well

:-[ :-[ :-[ :'( :'( :'(  Looks as if I may have to say bybyes to a 8GB sdhc card - Repartitioned it with Parted Magic (uses Gparted)

Set a 16MB Fat 16 at the beginning and then formatted the last 7.46GB as fat 32

BUT  :o low and behold it only shows 23MB fat when in the Card reader

So put it in camera and all there is available is room for 6 L pictures.

OFF to try the "C" CHDK version and see what happens

Well Well Well this may be a ???  :haha :haha :D 8) :lol situation --->>>

Even the DEPLETED 8GB card the "C" version update did something as the light was flashing on the back when I installed it - and seemed as if it went from 1.0.1 to 1.1

But have to check SOMEHOW to SEE if it did

Thank heavens have a 16GB card to play with - but have to see where to check whatever

Please excuse the ramblings of a relative newbie to photography

Cheers for years

As I said in the previous post this is wrong. Pier unfortunately confused you by answering a question you didn't ask.

You only need to mess with multiple partitions if you want chdk to start every time you turn the camera on . If you use firm update, you do not have to do anything special to the card, but you have to do the "update" manually each time you start the camera.

If there's a question in your following posts, I don't understand what it is. Suggest less smilies and more specifics.

Hey reyalp

FOUND this to take it to the 1.1.0 -

http://www.richardsmrt.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=34

So may now give this a try - HECK  whats one 8GB card eh

So off to the races again

And see what happens with the 1.1.0 update

Think you are suggestihe that each time i start the camera up need to activate the update as explained in teh chdk???

You seem deeply confused. It's not "taking your camera to 1.1"... the build linked there is from the german CHDKDE version. The 1.1 is a CHDK version, and has nothing to do with your camera firmware version.

Please take the time to read and understand the version explanation found at http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Downloads

Let me try one more time
* If you load CHDK using the "firm update" menu it starts CHDK once. CHDK is not actually a firmware upgrade, so as soon as you turn the camera off, it is unloaded. See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/%22firmware_update_method%22
* If you want CHDK to start automatically every time you turn the camera on then you need to use the bootable SD card method. For cards larger than 4gb, this means you need multiple partitions like Pier mentioned See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card
Don't forget what the H stands for.
