Hi All,

I own a canon digital camera - Powershot A630, I intend to take
pictures of night sky with this camera, mounted on a tripod. Recently
I updated the firmware to CHDK and managed to tweak ISO settings
successfully. But tweaking the shutter speed is proving to be tricky.

Without the CHDK update the maximum allowed shutter speed is 15
seconds, with the firmware update apparently that speed can be
extended. It seems that the camera accepts the change in shutter speed
beyond 15 seconds only in the daytime or when i try to shoot under
bright light, some how it automatically goes back to the default speed
of 15 seconds in the dark.

I don't know if I am missing something here, am fairly new to this.
please guide me in resolving this problem.

Did you take your camera out of "Auto" mode ?

Regardless, you have actually not updated your camera firmware using CHDK. No firmware "flashing" has taken place. CHDK does not change the firmware on your camera - it loads at boot time into your carmera's RAM memory and inserts itself like a benevolent virus into the operation of your camera. There have been no permanent changes to your camera - delete CHDK from your SD card, reboot and everything will be back as it was.

Maybe you'd be interested in a script called "Night shoots" posted here:

I have used this and it works very nice. You'll probably change it to continous loop. Actually I did it yesterday just to night timelapse, but I have no camera here to copy attach this version to you.

What does this sript do is allow camera to get exposure settings (it pressess half-shoot). Then it recalculates things and sets up appropriate exposure time.

Note that camera has to be in some of (semi)auto modes (I have used "P" mode).
