Help with SX230 (and SDMInst, or alternate method may be needed)

I just used the SDMInst to install the CHDK on my 4gb card for my new SX230. (Found here: http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/clickpansdm/sdminst.html)

I'm having some trouble with it, though. It sort of works - I can boot up the CHDK both manually and autoboot, and I've figured out how to use the Disp+Func buttons as the Alt button that this camera doesn't have. This displays CHDK menus. But, I managed to take one picture, and then after that the camera has been complaining that the memory card is full and won't let me do anything. I think I will have to reformat the card in order to be able to take pictures. Any ideas? Thanks!

Note: the SDMInst app insisted on making a partition with two parts on the card. Maybe that is the cause of the problem? I don't see why that is necessary, since the FAQ for this camera says it shouldn't need a partition.

Yes, that would cause a problem. The camera doesn't need multiple partitions, so it doesn't have the code to swap to the big one on startup.

You should be able to do the following:
Reformat the card in the camera.
Copy the CHDK files to the card
Load manually using the "firm update" method: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/%22firmware_update_method%22
use "make card bootable" in the chdk miscellaneous menu
Don't forget what the H stands for.

It's true that my SDMInst app will create two partitions on large cards even if the camera you have doesn't need it. My MacBoot app (see http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/macboot/macboot.html)will make a large, single partition card bootable though, and as Reyalp says, you can let the camera do it too.

Reyalp, that worked, thanks. I copied the files onto the card myself and then used the Make Card Bootable option*. Now when I move the lock slider thing it does boot automatically, but I think I will stick with manual boot most of the time because autoboot slows down turning on the camera, and could be annoying in situations where I just want a quick snapshot. Good to know I can do it though! I think I'll just slide the lock thing back and forth depending on the situation. (Autoboot when I'm taking artistic landscape photos; manual boot when I'm handing my camera to friends at a party.)

So the CHDK in general now works. I have two scripts I use on my SD1100 - the Ultra Intervelometer and the Fast Motion Detector. I installed them both a couple years ago. In general, can scripts be used on different camera models? Can I just copy the scripts from one camera's card to the other and use the ones I"m used to? Or are there camera-specific or newer scripts that I should get? The version of the CHDK automatically downloaded by the SDMInst app came with a bunch of scripts, one of which is called Motion, but it doesn't work the same as the one I'm used to.

Edit: Tried copying the scripts and they don't work - I get a message that says incompatible camera. So, where can I find scripts that are compatible with this camera? (The wiki page for this camera doesn't mention scripts, and the general lists of scripts don't seem to say which cameras they're compatible with, so I'm probably missing something, sorry for the basic questions.)

I need to buy some more SD cards - is there a size limit for using the chdk with this camera? Will I have problems if I get a big card?

*(I guess that didn't exist years ago last time I did this, so I didn't think of it...? I remember this being a lot more complicated. Or maybe the reason it was complicated was the Mac adding flags to files and using the SDMIst app to download them prevented that this time. In any case last time I remember having to do hexidecimal editing and this time I was able to just drag and drop files, so yay.)

Ah, that explains it. I think doing it on the card was easier. But I stil found the SDMInst app useful for identifying the right chdk build and auto downloading it for me, so thanks for making that app!

Hey, sorry for all the messages, but I got it working now! So ignore previous questions. I don't know what problem I was having last night, but now my old Ultra Intervelometer script does seem to work. I haven't tested all the relevant details, but it loads and takes pictures. I also found the newer motion detect script for cameras with a video button. Thanks again everyone :-)
