One point worth noting. Though they seem to be momentary push buttons, one press switches on  and the next press switches off - they don't work in a momentary fashion at the receiving end. Thus if you set up SDM or CHDK so that it takes a picture when the 5v signal is removed, that will happen on the second button press.
Hmmmm..... I suppose "somebody" could probably add an Input Switch type to the new USB Remote code that would trigger the shutter when USB power is either applied or removed ...

Not sure who's smart enough to do that :)

I just did some more range testing - it's at least 280' (85m) - see photo here 280 feet away

In the meantime,  its easy enough to write a simple script to do it.  Or just live with needing to press the button twice I guess.

@  waterwingz

Take a look at this page:

http://www.picaxeforum.co.uk/showthread.php?20123-rf-remote-control&highlight=remote

Combined with a PICAXE-08M2 interface the unit could be adapted to a single press, double press and two user defined applications via scripts or pan and tilt servo control.

EDIT:

The following is the PIXAXE interface.

The images may not render on the second and third Silicon Chip URL's. Click on the image boxes for the diagrams and right click to save the images.

The PICAXE circuit and code could be modified in conjunction with the wireless remote for a single press, double press and user defined functions.

Silicon Chip is a commercial Australian magazine. Only part of the article is available; the rest has to be purchased. The circuit diagrams provided on the pages and source code are sufficient for a remote control application. The original design published by Silicon Chip is identical to the PICAXE designs discussed on the PICAXE forums.

The forum search requires login in to the PICAXE Forum to reveal detailed information.

Search by PICAXE infrared control.

Lots of good stuff there but not really a complete design - the PICAXE remote is an IR device.   Still, its another nice little microcontroller with apparently good hobbyist level support.

I'm thinking that if I'm going to go to that much work,  I'd rather interface something like what is suggested in this forum thread :

http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=8105.0

Making it work over rf would be really sweet.
