Hi Andrew,

Waterwingz pointed me to this item and it looks like it could be the ideal answer to what I am looking for. I'm looking at running it on a SX40 HS, do you know if it works on that model?

I note in your example the photos of the birds and get the impression you just left the camera set up to see what happened, this leads me to ask a few questions,
-was the camera running on battery or an external power source?
-how long does the battery last? or can you set it to run motion detection for 2 hours, (I couldn't spot anything in the code)
I appreciate each model of camera will have a different answer, but any information you have would give me some guidance as to needing any other power supplies

Hi Chris.

The Motion Detect Plus script should be able to run on all cameras that support CHDK. If there are any issues with the sensitivity of the script the code can be tuned so it works better with your camera. Adding a short delay between motion detection events seems to fix most of the issues users experience with the script.

If you have a new battery you should be able to run the script on your camera for at least 90 minutes or so. Colder temperatures will affect the runtime. Some users plug in a spare AV cable if they want to save power and disable the LCD screen. (If the camera detects a cord is inserted into the AV jack it will automatically turn off the LCD display.)

Most Canon Powershot Cameras support external power through either a DC barrel style power connector or a "dummy" battery module that fits into your battery compartment. This will allow you to run the motion detection script for as long as you want to.

Here is a picture of the Canon ACK-DC10 dummy battery module.


Advanced CHDK users have even explored the process of adapting a Canon dummy battery module to run the camera off a higher capacity external battery for filming in remote locations.

@Microfunguy :  Did you even make any measurements to determine the efficiency of those 12 to (insert Canon voltage here)  DC-DC converter that you purchased ?

No, I was not that interested because the capacity of the lead-acid battery is more than adequate for the type of shooting that I have done.

I also use the battery to power a rotating rig.

I suspected as much.  I asked because after my recent experiments on battery life using all the tricks for an intervalometer,  my next project is to find a way to estimate how many amp-hrs you would need from a battery for a given intervalometer duration.  If cost & weight are not an issue,  a deep discharge marine battery should just about last for ever (I think).  Other than that,  it would be nice to have some "rule of thumb" measure.   I guess I'll see what I can find online for DC-DC convertors (there are some small PCB only one available from the usual Chinese suppliers for a few dollars) and do some tests.

That is the hill I fly model airplanes from. The boulder is on the edge of the "unimproved runway". I would probably have to wait until the next ice age to see all of the glacially deposited boulders move...

Very nice ! 

Using a "Watt's Up" is really a great hack. 

And as a Nikon DSLR fan (not keen on Canon DSLRs - sorry) it was good to see you risk toasting a Canon DSLR in the video :)
