@CF2012 again

When you use the intervalometer, can you set the focus to manual mode, and set it to near infinity that way. I am concerned that if you use any other method that once one photo has been taken it will reset to normal. But in manual focus I know it will stay where it is set (or at least it did for me before I installed CHDK).

The script is interval.bas in the root folder

To focus, I press the left button on the dial, till I get MF, then dial up to infinity

Hmm I'm having trouble replicating the change of focus issue.  Maybe ignore it and if it happens again, I'll try to find out what is happening.

I'm getting that problem I had yesterday, with intervalometer stopping after taking the 2nd photo.  This time I'm in P mode.  Note: intervalometer was working fine (multiple shots before interrupted) and then suddenly wasn't.  This could be related to what was happening yesterday, if the problem is that, after running intervalometer a number of times, in succession, without reloading the firmware, that intervalometer's counter is no longer working/being reset. (speculation)

I can use the 5 seconds for the sky :)  But yes, if it can take faster shots, that would give even more functionality.

I tried changing the ratio of photos to 16:9 and then selecting M2, but that didn't make a noticeable difference to the speed between shots, so there goes that hypothesis.

Regarding the focus issue, I've mentioned my findings today.  Which is, I can't replicate the issue so I'm guessing I must've been the cause of the problem yesterday (changing something).  If I find the issue again, I'll try to work out what the difference is. :)

The example default script does not have a counter - it runs forever until stopped.

I have a feeling that the black screen is while the CHDK software is processing the picture, to work out if it needs to do anything special with the picture.
Unless you are saving raw or dng or using features like curves or shot_histogram CHDK really doesn't spend any time processing the picture.

Under some circumstances, the Canon firmware will spend extra time doing things. The most significant is that long exposures (typically longer than a few seconds) will do a dark frame, meaning the time to shoot is more than 2x the exposure time.

Is there anyway to minimise the delay from taking a picture? Can we turn off certain default features to speed things up?
The defaults settings should not be noticably slower than without chdk. It's possible that some of them are set wrong...

Also, is there anyway for CHDK to cope with the fast press of the shutter without the camera locking up? Just curious.
If the camera locks up, it's a bug. This isn't normal CHDK behavior.

What does the camera do when it stops staking pictures ? Is the screen on ? Is the UI still responsive ? Is there any message in the script console ? Is the camera in half-press state ?

@reyalp
Thanks for your responses to my post. I'll go through CHDK tomorrow and make sure everything possible is turned off, and then see how quickly the response is from taking a picture. What I saw yesterday, was it could take 2-5 seconds (wasn't counting, just waiting) before the camera was ready to take another picture. That would make it pretty much unusable as far as I am concerned, which was why I didn't play with it today. I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens. I'll also turn CHDK off and see how long it takes between shots then, and compare.

I'll post my findings...

@reyalp
I just did a very quick test....

Without CHDK picture to picture is about 1.5 - 2 seconds of black screen
With CHDK picture to picture is about 6 seconds of black screen.

This is with the default load immediately from the Firm Update without changing any settings.

Now I have run through the CHDK menus and made everything off... Then the black screen is back to the normal 2 seconds... More usable. I'll have to look into the menus and decide exactly what I want activated.

I did try the quick shot again, with no waiting for the green focus & exposure box, and the camera crashed... You can hear it try to take a picture then turns the camera off. I'd say that sounds like a bug to me. How should we report it?

-In fact with raw the black screen time is longer, Cam is not using exmem but dont thinks its an issue, In my other chdk cams sx200 & sx210 the raw save time is almos the same, any other cams is faster? or can I speed it in any way?

How could I solve the quick shutter press hang?
