Well, I did not get far with the testing. I am trying to run the tests from http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Testing and can load the scripts but, they fail to execute with "*** STARTED *** :1: unexpted symbol near '<' PRESS SHUTTER TO CLOSE" when running llibtst.lua. Camera appeared to take picture but I get no image when in playback mode.

After further investigation, it appears that pictures are now being saved. I unlocked the SD card (ie CHDK not loaded) and took a couple of pictures. Then after I locked the SD card again (to load CHDK on startup) I can see the existing pictures and when I took new pictures, I could see them as well.
As this was a brand new SD card, could be an issue with creating the directory structure or saving of the first picture ?

Did you get any llibtst.log file? Did you copy llibtst.lua from web or are you running the file included in your distribution? CHDK/SCRIPTS/TEST/LLIBTST.LUA

Maybe it is a bug.  I'm not sure if that script was tested in other firmware versions.

Thanks for your help and clarifications. I was using the scripts from the web. Now that you pointed me in the right direction, I made further progress by running the scripts already located in the chdk/scripts/test directory. Log files attached. Results summary:

llibtst.lua : ***end io OK***, ***end os FAIL 2***, ***end string OK***, *** FINISHED *** (note: file date/ time indicates 12/31/1999 11:00 pm but, I deleted and re-ran test, same results file created again, same date/ time)
setmode.lua : crashed during run, no log created
ubtest.bas : no errors observed.

Let me know if I can provide any additional information or run any additional tests. I think I can create dump files if needed.

os failed because mkdir function failed, the same problem was detected (and persists) in a810 and a2300.  CHDK works but it need to be checked better.

Did you see any message before crash? Could you generated ROMLOG.LOG?

Have you tested RAW generation? Is it OK?  What about video recording? is it working well?

Attached is the rom log from yesterday.
Today, I tried setmode.lua again, this time with *RAW* mode turned off (it was on last time) and, this time it did not crash, though it gave an error "*** S  * - not available, 31 FAILED check log, press a key, *** FINISHED ***. Attached is the setmode.log as well.
I tried generating a log manually (via the /chdk/scripts/test/romlog.lua and that manual rom dump failed with "*** STARTED ***, :16: ERROR: your chdk does not support native function calls, PRESS SHUTTER TO CLOSE"

Raw (DNG) pictures generated and look ok (though the first 2 raw dng are garbled - this was at the time I could not save regular pictures either, till I took a picture with chdk inactive).

Video recording causes the camera to crash, I tried generating a rom log manually but, that gives an error.
I am quite excited to use this camera to its' full potential. Thanks for your help.

I sent a new version for test by e-mail to you. Video rec should work.

To generate the ROM log, you can use the menu:
Miscellaneous stuff -> Debug Parameters -> Save ROM crash log

According to your log, setmode.log is not working, I think that it was not tested with other firmware versions.

Thanks for the update. I took a new empty sd card, formatted it in the camera, rest all the Canon options to their factor defaults, prepared the SD card and unzipped the new release in the root. All 3 tests run now and I can record video. Raw mode also working. Attached are the test log files (as there were a couple of errors but no crashes).
I will continue to test and will report back.

(2 posts to accommodate the number of attachments limit.
