My firmware version is also 1.01a, CHDK version 2651 and my camera crashes also, but it happens when i take the cable out.
Good - that's when I would have expected the crash to happen based on the code I'm looking at.

When I first plug in the cable, there is some activity, but no picture taken.
This is normal if you used the settings I requested (per my earlier post).  The camera will focus and set exposure when the cable is plugged in and then take the actual shot when the cable is removed.

I tried again, with the CHDK version you supplied (2647) and the same thing happened, activity when plugging in, then crash when disconnecting.
Thank you for trying that.  It creates a bit of a problem because that suggests no sx260hs firmware version will work with CHDK sync.    Just to be very sure - would you mind going to the Miscellaneous Menu and using the Show Build Info option to confirm that you have 2647 loaded ?

Does the camera screen blank when you first insert the cable ?

That's a good question - it should if remote sync is enabled.

Also - it would be good to hear test results from anyone with a different firmware version.

I only have CHDK changeset 2558 on my PC but capt_seq.c is identical for SX240hs and SX260hs.

Does the remote work on the SX240hs ?

When inserting the cable, there is a green flash on the screen, and whatever the camera is aimed at is shown for an instant.  Upon removing the cable, the lens stays extended, the screen goes blank and the camera needs to be restarted.  The camera can be restarted by pressing the review button or turning it off, then, back on.

What happens after that ?   What does the screen look like in between "whatever the camera is aimed at is shown for an instant"  and "removing the cable"?

The screen goes black immediately after the green flash, but the camera turns off when the cable is removed.

I noticed that too - I seem to recall they are the same camera but one has GPS and the other doesn't.

I tried surfing capt_seq.c for other cameras released on the same date (Feb 7th 2012).  There are 10 of them but not all have CHDK support yet.   I found the hook in roughly the same place on the A3400 and close on the A1300.

I'm starting to wonder how much of this is cut&paste porting and how many of these ports have actually had  their USB remote sync functionality tested?

The A3400 works OK.
