Can't get 'Firm. Update' to appear on G10 1.02A

I first upgraded my G10 firmware to 1.02A (as this is the earliest firmware supported, or at least the earliest for which there's an autobuild), so I'm already familiar with how to update the firmware.

However, I followed the readme's instructions exactly, and the option in the main menu to start CHDK simply does not appear. What I did:

1. Downloaded http://mighty-hoernsche.de/bins/g10-102a-1.0.0-1798-full.zip
2. Unzipped, copied files to root level of a freshly-formatted 8GB SD card

Directory listing looks like:

total 1152
32768 Apr 11 12:41 CHDK
32768 Apr 11 12:40 DCIM
257489 Apr 11 06:52 DISKBOOT.BIN
159952 Apr 11 06:52 PS.FI2
450 Sep  6  2011 changelog.txt

3. Inserted card into camera, powered into playback mode
4. Menu, scroll to bottom

No firmware update option.

So, I'm totally stuck here.

Please note that the Canon update you used to get 1.02A firmware loaded is a firmware update. Loading CHDK follows the same process but does not update any firmware - no permanent changes are made.

No firmware update option.
Process looks correct to me and it works on my G10 1.02A.  To double check - you powered into "Playback" mode by pressing the Play button on the back of the camera right away - not after starting the camera with the On/Off switch on the top ?

UPDATE :  if you are using a Mac,  this might be of interest, although you can see the files on your SD card so maybe not :  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F

Just to say that if you use my ACID app on your Mac to locate and download a build, it unzips the build for you, avoiding the quarantine flag problem. See http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/acid/acid.html

I get crazy here.
I am on Mac OSX 10.6.8-
I used SDminst to format and make the 4GB SD card bootable.
I have copied with it the folder g10-104a into the card.

When I start the powrshoot in playback mode and scroll down the menu I do NOT get any more the option to update the firmware. Why it that????

If you used SDMinst to make the card bootable,  and you set the SD card lock switch to the lock position,  CHDK should have loaded automatically when you started the camera and you should have briefly seen the CHDK logo.   You do not need to use the "firmware update method to load CHDK.

When you start in playback mode,  there needs to be a PS.FI2 file in the root directory of your SD card.  Is it there ?  That's the CHDK code that gets loaded as if it was a firmware update.  The diskboot.bin file is the CHDK code that gets loaded using the SD card lock boot method.

I just downloaded the latest CHDK for the G10 and checked it on my camera ( f/w 1.02A).   Both the SD card lock and firmware update method work properly.

You might also look at this http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F .  Not sure if STMinst.exe gets around this problem properly or not.

Question: I think (?) I have the official Canon 1.0.3 firmware in the camera. Is it OK or to start I must have a different firmware or version? And it is correct that I dl CHDK version: g10-104a-1.0.0-1905-full.zip  (731KB)  from http://mighty-hoernsche.de/ site?

You could try the 1.02A and 1.04A versions.

Also,  for the G10,  the information describing how to use a ver.req file to get your real version is correctly described here :  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#Q._How_can_I_get_the_original_firmware_version_number_of_my_camera.3F

I run crazy here!!!

I have checked my powrshoot g10 firmware and i confirm is v.1.0.3b

I have as consequence download the full (700kb) CHDK 1.0.3b firmware.

I start the canon in playback mode.

I copied the various CHDK files and folder including PS.F12 and ver.reg into the main directory of my card....

When I click the camera menu and scroll down, I do NOT see any firmware update option. I have tried it many times, no luck. I have played with lens on and off, always in playback mode, no luck.
(I have tried to create also a bootable SD , I have a 4GB card) in fat16 or fat32 but even by loocking the card, nothing is happening). I used SDMinst formatting utility. I give up and just formatted it using mac OSX

Just to check - the PS.FI2 file is in the root directory on the card? That's where it has to be.
