I'm looking at buying a Canon A650IS and using CHDK with a remote release (cable).
(I want to mount the camera on a hang glider wing).

Is it possible to power off/on the camera using the remote to save battery using scripts?
Or, tell the camera to go to sleep if not used for a few minutes and wake-up when the remote is pressed?

Thanks,
Damo

As Barney mentioned, it is possible to shut down the cam from a script, and thus with a remote.

To learn if it is possible to wake it up, go to the camera store and ask them to connect the cam to PC, while the cam is off. If it wakes up (some Canons do, some don't), then it can be fully controled with a remote.

Actually, such info should be gathered on Wiki. Hey, Barney?

Ahhhhh! What life has taught me:

Never put the camera in the bag without the cap on.
Never leave a memory card in the pants pocket.
And never ever ever tell Barney to update the Wiki.

Thanks for the replies.
Does anyone have an A650IS which they can plug into their PC to see if it will wake up?
Or, know of any models (with IS) which will?

Has anyone made a USB remote which has several buttons (i.e. sends proper key commands)
So you could control more functions (not just shutter).
e.g. shoot, burst, video, zoom

I noticed that fingalo has already done a multi-button remote.
CHDK

Now just need to find out which cameras will wake-up automatically when connected to USB.

(Didja get the hint, Whoever? :) )
Quite. I'm however not proficient enough in any of the mentioned subjects to give tutorials. My modest contribution for the moment will thus be limited to (i) adding the clause "Wakes up on USB signal?" to the title of the last column on CameraFeatures page, and (ii) adding two little entries, "yes" for S3IS (correct me if I'm wrong) and "no" for IXUS950 (don't correct me, or you'll be wrong).

Regarding the wake up/sleep on the USB cable. I am not a software person; I am capable of building electronic hardware interfaces.

I understand there is a facility to program a number of shots in the software. While a lot of options are probably easier in software; I am looking at a number of hardware enhancement circuits.

For example stop motion or high speed shots. Lets say 10 shots are programmed into the shutter release and taken in rapid succession, then the camera goes to sleep for 5 minutes. It is an easy matter to use a timer set to 5 minute intervals to wake up the camera. A common 555 timer circuit will do it, but in certain designs the first timing pulse is inaccurate. There are precision 555 timer chips which will overcome the problem, but hard to obtain. Another way is to use CMOS counter chips.

Upon the wakeup of the camera, I assume there is a delay between the camera wakeup timer and the shutter activation time. Lets say a pulse on the USB cable  wakes up the camera after 5 minutes of sleep. This pulse may be on for 5 seconds before it switches off. Can the camera be programmed to sense the USB voltage, sense a 5 second repeating pulse, do its shoot sequence then place itself in sleep mode until the next timing sequence?

For example:
Camera in sleep mode.
Camera senses a voltage on the USB cable.
The USB cable wakes up the camera.
The camera senses a 5 second pulse.
The pulse tells the camera to take sequential shots.
Camera stays awake for 20 seconds; senses no repeating pulse and places itself in sleep mode.
5 minutes later the sequences repeat itself until the operator switches off the timer.

The camera needs to be able to differentiate between a permanent high on the cable and a pulse of say 1 second duration. A permanent high may mean that the operator may want to use alternative functions in the camera where a software countdown timer will interpret the USB cable signal as shooting sequential shots.

My camera is an S3IS.
