Thanks.

The difference is quite striking between NOCHDK.JPG and WITHCHDK.JPG. I've attached a 1:1 png crop.

I dumped and diffed the exif from each with exiftool -v -v -v and don't see anything that looks relevant. Output is attached if anyone else wants to look at it.

Puzzling

Not sure where to go next. Testing a CHDK build with capt_seq disabled might be worthwhile.

edit:
@radioman193 what canon firmware version is your SX40 (1.00d, 1.00f etc) ?

If you use custom Auto ISO try setting "IS factor" to 8.
The only way I got so blurriness is to use "IS" and the camera on a tripod.
Are you sure the "IS" is off in Canon menu?

OK, here's a test build with capt_seq disabled.

This is *not* a fully functioning CHDK, it's just a test that might help us narrow down where the problem is. Most CHDK shooting related features (overrides, bracketing, raw etc) will not work with this build.

If you can take test shorts with this build, and without any CHDK, that may help us. Please upload the original files like you did on the previous shots.

Those images look pretty much identical to me, which suggests the problem involves one of the capt_seq modifications that always runs. If no one else beats me to it, I'll try to take a look and see if I can narrow it down a bit more. I don't have much time on weekdays though, so it will be slow.

Just to be clear, that build is *not* a fix even if it appears to "fix" the problem, it just has a big chunk of CHDK disabled.

I still haven't had a chance to test mine (weather here is awful at the moment).

I'm not sure what's going on but those two images are odd.
The CHDK image is much better on the left 2/3rds of the image; but the stock image is better on the right 1/3rd.
Look at the rock at the bottom right on each image or the treetops on the right - the stock image appears focused and the CHDK one does not.
In the middle or left edge the CHDK image appears focused and the stock image doesn't.

A de-centered lens can cause focus variations across the frame; but this is usually fixed and does not change from image to image.
