That's a big difference, have you tried to set "Disable Overrides" to ON.

can you please post the original jpegs somewhere ? A file sharing site like box.com, zshare etc. Then we can see all of the exif, and the entire image.

I agree that your "with chdk" image looks fuzzier, but this is pretty hard to interpret. Both a pretty muddy, and either the camera moved or they are different crops.
It would be helpful if you can:
1) Use a clearer test scene with high contrast details.
2) Use a tripod or set the camera on something so the images are really identical. If you turn off autoboot (unlock the card) and load chdk manually with firm update, you can do CHDK and no-CHDK shots without moving the camera
3) Use ISO 80 and high shutter speed.
4) Take several shots with each, so we can see if there is any shot-to-shot variation independent of whether CHDK is loaded or not.

If you believe this is true and want something done about it then you should post original unmodified jpegs of an otherwise identical, resolution limited scene. Just posting "I think they are different" is totally useless. If this is a really issue, then we need to address it scientifically.


I find it difficult to imagine a mechanism where CHDK would cause this. The only thing I can think of that might be vaguely plausible is if the canon has some real-time task that needs to run to control the lens, and CHDK interferes with it running. This would seem most likely to be the case if IS were active, so trying with and without IS might be worthwhile.

i can not use the same card   as the lock switch is broke on the chdk card.
so i HAVE to swap the cards.

and the POSTED JPG files are UNEDITED Direct off the camera.


I DID and DO use a tripod.

i will now go do 2 more shots .

No you don't. If you put the CHDK files on the "non CHDK" card, but don't make it bootable, you can load CHDK once with http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/%22firmware_update_method%22

As soon as you restart the camera, CHDK will no longer be loaded. You don't need to do anything special to the card to use this method, just copy the files.

They are 2048x1150 so either you aren't shooting full resolution, or they've been re-sized. Many photo hosting sites silently re-size and re-compress the files, even if you upload the originals. So posting a zip of the original, full resolution files to a file sharing site is a much more reliable method.

edit:
According to your posted exif, the images were 4000x2248, so they've definitely been re-sized. They also were not originally shot at full resolution. According platform_camera.h the native resolution of the sx40 is 4072x3044. Shooting at full resolution should make any focus related effects much clearer, since the image isn't being re-sampled.

I've not noticed any difference in focus with or without CHDK - when the weather improves I'll run some tests.

It's also worth deleting the CHDK/CCHDK.CFG file (CHDK/CCHDK2.CFG if you are using the 1.1 development version) to reset CHDK back to defaults.
